Anyone have chords for Galway Rover? Especially the version by Cherish the Ladies, if there are variants.

Thanks

Good Luck, I've been after this one for sometime. Look for an earlier thread. Dennis O'Flaherty has a good recording of it. Seamus Kennedy told me he didn't know it and if Seamus doesn't know it it is gonna be very hard to find. Hope for both of us he has found it since I asked him last May.

It's been a year...have the chords surfaced yet? I found the words on an earlier thread.

I'm happy to decipher the chords if someone can send the verse, chorus/middle eight via lo-fi Wave, MP3 or Real Audio. I don't know the song otherwise.

John, I recently bought a CD by a Victorian (Oz)group, 'Blackwood', it has this song on it. I liked it so decided to learn it. I'll get a friend to listen to it for me, he usually has success putting chords to tunes.
Cheers

Jennie G,

This is another of those illusive songs. I know its fairly simple, I just can'r suss out the chords. I tend to make them more difficult than I need. Also the lyrics have been in question for me. The verse about the roses for instance. The version I have is hard to understand, sung by a Kerryman and you know they all have cultural speach impediments built in at birth.

"All the creatures of Erin sing their own sweet song of ....?"

Is it Jinny is my love or Jilly is my love, I swear I can hear it bothways in each chorus.

Song lyrics can be had off the Celtic Love Songs CD as recorded by Cherish the Ladies. I plan to transpose them to paper as they are not included in the liner notes but I might need help with the few Gaelic references. If anyone could save me the time (not to mention the embaressment). I plan to perform it at a recital in Morgantown, WV as representative of the ties between the Appalachian folk songs and their Irish anscestors. This is in March 2002 so I'm tight on time. Thanks

Hi,

Just out of curiosity, did anyone ever get the chords to this?

I read somewhere that a Noel McLoughlin has recorded this song and included lyrics w/ chords in the liner notes. Maybe someone has this recording?

The song sounds like it has some fairly general G D C progression.

Rich

Don,

The version I have is sung by a woman so she sings "Jimmy is my love" - perhaps you could insert the name of your choice in this one!

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: THE GALWAY ROVER (Pete St John)
From: GUEST,Rich_and_Dee

Quite a while ago there were requests for chords to the song "Galway Rover", a Pete St John song popularized by Cherish the Ladies.

I've received so much great help advice and chords from this group, I thought I'd contribute a little back. Here are the chords to the song, as I've been able to figure them out. Enjoy.

THE GALWAY ROVER

A                                                    E
I've the face of a stranger , with the smile of a rover
A                                                    D
I'll take a glass at down Kinvarna, and a jug at Oughterard
A                                                 E
Down the great donkey roads to the hills of Connemara
       D               E             D       E       A
To my dark Spanish handsome love way down in Galway town

D                                  A                D
Where Jimmy he's me love, he's me pride, he's me darling
G                            D               A
Jimmy leaves me wander to the ends of the world
D                                 A                   D
Jimmy brings me love, gives me hope, and sets me dreaming
    G
And when the leaves are turning,
       D                A             D
In his arms I'll settle down in Galway town

Well I went looking for this song again and here it is. The chords aren't quite as I think they should be but they are along ways toward righter than I was before.

Thanks Rich

Try these chords and tell me what you think. I also changed the direction of the song to the way I first heard it by Patrick O'Flaherty in New Orleans.

I have repaired some chords in the last line of the verse. I think I like this version better. Tray all three and see which one you like best.
