Subject: new virus From: kendall Date: 14 Apr 01 - 11:11 AM According to my doctor, there is a new and very nasty virus going around. I have had it for most of a week, and it is a real drag. It must be quite powerful, because I take vitamins C, and,E, I usually avoid crowds. I went out to a concert last Saturday evening, and a woman coughed on me. If I had my way, anyone who goes out in public with a cold would be jailed! I've seen waitresses serving food while coughing and sneezing. In such cases, I leave right after upbraiding the guilty one. |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Apr 01 - 11:24 AM Yeah........Last Friday I had a slight tickle and by Sunday my chest hurt so badly from coughing every minute (at least) that I could barely move. Went to the Doc on Monday and hit the drugs. I' still have a lot of chest congestion, but it improves daily. I'm now at the point where its hard to get the stuff up as opposed to a few days ago, so its drying up. I had to reschedule my aortagram for the 21st because I couldn't feature some guy running a probe around inside my arteries while I had a coughing spasm. Personally, I think this is a new computer virus that I got from Fielding. Kendall, you could have it too. Remember that Rick was really down and just as he got well, we got sick......fits the incubation period. I figure Rick passed it through one of his messages that I read and it attacked my immune drive, wiping out my antibodies...............Well, its a theory anyway.........................And I'm stickin' to it!! Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: Jeri Date: 14 Apr 01 - 11:25 AM Alright - did you check this virus warning out at any of the internet hoax sites before posting?!?! ;-) You know the best way to avoid catching colds? Wash your hands. The cold viruses aren't airborne. Most of the time, you get them by touching a surface with the virus on it, and then getting them into your body by rubbing your eyes or rubbing/picking your nose or something. I don't think it's possible to avoid all of them unless you constantly wash your hands and never touch any mucous membranes. (Pay attention, in the next half hour or so - how many times do you touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands?) Folks shouldn't be handling cooked food if they're likely to sneeze or cough on it. Might be better to talk to the manager - s/he's the one who will do something about it. The employee will probably just go back to business as normal. |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: kendall Date: 14 Apr 01 - 11:31 AM I wash my hands a dozen times a day, and, I'm very careful about handling food. Especially, eggs, meat and poultry. That lady coughed on my cookie! Go Spaw! |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: Amos Date: 14 Apr 01 - 11:50 AM LOL!!! Nice shot, Bill!. I got steamrollered in meatspace by the same thing a couple of weeks back. Yucky. But it didn't touch my hard disk, 'cuz i use a Mac. You can wash your hands forever, but my philosophy so far is its better to strengthen your immune system -- even at the risk of getting a cold once a year or so -- naturally. I hate the thought of what's in those triple- bombshell flu shots, and avoid them somewhat like the plague. A |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: Bill D Date: 14 Apr 01 - 10:51 PM funny thing is, that's how I dress many days...plus a face shield. I turn wood, some of it nasty smelling, some of it wiht toxic substances...MOST of it dusty, which my wife would rather not be tracked upstairs. A side benefit is that I don't got out in public a lot, and get very few viruses. |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: Cap't Bob Date: 14 Apr 01 - 11:21 PM Pickled garlic works for me most of the time during the cold season. Four to six cloves of pickled before you go out in public and most people will tend to avoid you and/or at least keep their distance. Cap't Bob |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: Peg Date: 14 Apr 01 - 11:40 PM we are all around sick people every day if we go out in public. Getting sick from germs (picking up a virus or "bug" from another human) is only possible if we have let ourselves get run down and our immune system is susceptible... The common cold is nothing more than an upper respiratory infection that we get when, after winter sets in, we get into a routine of eating heavier foods, drinking less water, exercising less, breathing recycled dry air, and, especially imbibing rich food and drink for the holidays. All this acidifies the blood, makes the body produce more mucus; and this lets a "cold" take hold... |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: Bernard Date: 15 Apr 01 - 05:20 AM 'Feed a cold and starve a fever' as my old granny used to say. 'Treat a cold and it lasts a fortnight, ignore it and it lasts two weeks' - grandad. Well, I'm a grandad now, but so far I haven't come up with any pearls of wisdom to match those... |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: Jeri Date: 15 Apr 01 - 10:41 AM Well, a cold is a virus, and there are things we can do to make our immune systems more susceptible, but the virus has to be there. Interesting to note that a lot of symptoms of illnesses in general are caused not by the virus itself, but by our immune systems' reaction. I worked in hospitals for years, and whenever I moved to a new place, I'd get colds one right after the other. After that, I was immune to those specific cold viruses, and wouldn't get sick for years. If you're exposed to a cold and get the virus into your body, you're gonna get it, unless you've had it recently enough to still have antibodies. I used to track attack rates for colds. Wherever I was living, there was a huge increase in September. All the kids started school and shared their colds, then brought them home to share with their families, who went to work or other schools and shared them with others. There was also an increase in Jan. I think that one had to do with folks traveling over the holidays to places where folks didn't have an immunity to the specific cold viruses they carried. |

Subject: RE: Help: new virus From: nutty Date: 15 Apr 01 - 11:02 AM The biggest culprits for passing on cold and other viruses are coins. They are passed from person to person, never washed or disinfected and carry a whole host of "nasties". Use credit cards when shopping - or better still don't shop at all and your wealth will improve along with your health |
