...I am pleased to report that Joe Offer is alive and well and on his way to the Okefenokee Swamp. Why he would want to visit a mosquito and alligator infested swamp is a mystery, however...

In spite of thick smoke, falling ash, and choking air from the Mallory Swamp fire, which I understand has burned thousands of acres, he made his way to the banks of the Suwannee River for the 49th Annual Florida Folk Festival!

Joe could be seen regaling a Saturday night campground song circle with songs in the "Key of R". He charmed troll, who was in the circle along with Cheryl and Ray Belanger, Kate Carpenter, Vgo, Sally Anderson of hammered dulcimer fame, Deb the fiddler, the enigmatic Klez Kamp whistle player, and of course, yours truly!

We had some delightful chats, traded music into the night, and he received his first and probably his last (it'll make a good dust rag for those seventeen book cases when he moves up the canyon) tie dye shirt!

The air was dry, the music drifted among the smoke, the wind blew it away, and Joe said goodbye and headed North into the swamp....hg

I was fortunate enough to be spotted by Joe along the banks of the Suwanee River after my band's performance at the River Gazebo. You'll be pleased to know that he was wearing his Mudcat T-shirt at the time. Quite the gentleman, that Joe is. Glad I got to meet him. Now the rest of you are instructed to show up next Memorial Day weekend for the 50th Florida Folk Festival. Harpgirl and I will be taking attendance.

I had a delightful conversation at my camp with Joe on Sunday night. He is a very nice guy. He had come to the dance which our band, The 24th Stret Klezmer Band played earlier and I'm pretty sure it was him that I saw dancing.
The Klez Kamp whistle player to whom Harpgirl alluded is John Monkus who plays recorder in the Klezmer band. He looks a bit like Rasputin.
Get Harpgirl to tell you about her T-shirt.
In fact Abby, if you don't, I will.!

Why not let me be the judge of that? I can't leave as soon as I thought I could, so send photos with and without the T-shirt.

"Charming raconteur"?
After all the time I've spent trying to build a reputation as a curmudgeon, Abby says I'm CHARMING?
Back to the cave.

Tell ya what -- volunteer as Spaws "in loco mammarian fixator" and he'll intern you in curmudgeonhood. He can't cover all the ground he is uncovering doing research for the Temple of the Golden Globe....
