Subject: Simple .wav editor
From: GUEST,Ed

Hi,

I'm looking for a (hopefully freeware) wave file editor.

All I need to do is isolate a small section of an existing .wav file and save it. Fade ins / outs would be nice.

There used to be something given away with soundblaser cards, wave studio? which did the job, but I can't find my old CD with it on.

Grateful for any pointers.

Thanks

Ed

Syntrillium "Cool Edit" is o.k and reasonably priced.

if it's just one .wav, zip it and email it to jon.loomes@hotmail.com and I'll fix it for you.

(I do this eight hours a day for my job)

cheers,

EJ

Try here:

and click on 'Multimedia.' This is a site BillD recommends regularly and I've found it to be a gold mine for freeware.

As long as it was mentioned, how do I zip a file?

Burke,

I'd suggest downloading Winzip from www.winzip.com and reading the help files.

If you're still stuck after that come back to ask.

Hope that helps

Ed

It's actually amazing what you can do with Sound Recorder and Windows Media Player, which come with Windows. I mixed sound effects for a stage play on my computer, just using those programs.

Burke, there are several utilities that do a very good job of Zipping files. I suppose the best-known ones are WinZip and PKZip, but they're both about thirty to forty bucks. You should be able to find a free utility to do the job, or one that's bundled with something else. I've had Norton System Works (Norton Utilities, Antivirus, and other stuff) for years, and they always have some sort of Zip utility that works fine. I'm sure McAfee has a product of similar quality and price.

Come on Joe,

Winzip is free...

If the 'buy' screen bugs you, click on the download button on this page for a free serial number.

Before anyone gets to shocked, remember that the guy who invented winzip killed himself with drink and drugs because he couldn't handle the success.

EasyZip 2000, offered here:

http://www.thefreesite.com/easyzip111.htm

is a completely free zip utility. I've used it for a couple years with great success.

Wave files don't compress very well using zip utilities. For lossless compression use Monkey's Audio & ignore the silly name - it does a great job, often reducing the file to about half size, much smaller than a zipped wave file.
