Subject: HELP-Jonathon Livingstones Seagull From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 03 May 05 - 03:19 PM My Missus is at it again!, she thinks this book may have been an inspiration for an album she heard years ago (late 70s) which included the song,DEAR FATHER WE DREAM. She also thinks it MIGHT have been Neil Diamond that recorded it. Now, if you knew my missus (little darlin') you would know that this could be a massive shot in the dark with no hope of being anywhere near right, but if she is right thats me with constant ear ache for months.(*bg*) Still I like to live dangerously, so any help would be gratefully received. whb |

Subject: RE: HELP-Jonathon Livingstones Seagull From: Beer Date: 03 May 05 - 08:02 PM This thread reminds me of a short story I'd like to share. Years ago (about 1970-71)I had an adolescent(14-15) catatonic patient in my care. his name was Jonathon. I use tocall him by all three names. He didn't speak to anyone. I use to take him out for walks and so on. One day I I came in and gave him the book. One day he said "thank you for the book". I often wondered how he made out when he was discharged. Beer |
Subject: RE: HELP-Jonathon Livingstones Seagull From: open mike Date: 03 May 05 - 08:16 PM from the amazon site..a review of Jonathan Livingston Seagull: "Most gulls don't bother to learn more than the simplest facts of flight--how to get from shore to food and back again," writes author Richard Bach in this allegory about a unique bird named Jonathan Livingston Seagull. "For most gulls it is not flying that matters, but eating. For this gull, though, it was not eating that mattered, but flight." Flight is indeed the metaphor that makes the story soar. Ultimately this is a fable about the importance of seeking a higher purpose in life, even if your flock, tribe, or neighborhood finds your ambition threatening. (At one point our beloved gull is even banished from his flock.) By not compromising his higher vision, Jonathan gets the ultimate payoff: transcendence. Ultimately, he learns the meaning of love and kindness. The dreamy seagull photographs by Russell Munson provide just the right illustrations--although the overall packaging does seem a bit dated (keep in mind that it was first published in 1970). Nonetheless, this is a spirituality classic, and an especially engaging parable for adolescents. --Gail Hudson From AudioFile Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a bird who teaches us how to follow our dreams and reach our goals, no matter what anyone else might think. Jonathan is a seagull who wants to master the art of flying, even though his flock has told him many times that all seagulls should concentrate on is getting food. Jonathan has tried to be a "good gull," but he cannot quell his urge to fly. Richard Bach reads this fable in a calm voice that sounds like a blowing wind. When there's fighting among the gulls, the tone of his voice reflects that anger. Jonathan's tale moves us as much as Richard Bach's voice does. Subject: RE: HELP-Jonathon Livingstones Seagull From: robomatic Date: 04 May 05 - 04:05 AM I think there was a book about "Jon L. Seagull, payback time!" The less said about it, the better. But aside from that, I loved the '70's. |
