I have acquired at the right price a second hand (30 days guarantee) Samsung CFG9637L 20" Monitor (1800x1620) (manufactured 1997) and am looking for appropriate drivers. Currently Win9x (98SE doesn't list it at the moment), but am wanting eventually to move to XP - I assume XP might have them? (they won't work for 98, I think!) It will be useful for my old eyes...

Any help will be appreciated - some searching so far has not turned up anything useful as far as drivers go - someone may know some secret Geek Site... :-0

There's one for download on this page: DriverZone.com - Samsung monitor drivers, file sm20gls.zip (it says zip but it's a link to a download site), just under half-way down the page. I had a quick look at the inf file with the driver and it appears to be for Win95. It may well work with 98SE.

Your monitor seems to be off of the charts at Samsung. I tried the U.S. and Australia and it doesn't show up at either place. This does present a quandry, because normally going to the manufacturer is the best place to get your drivers. Next best is if it was part of a package, to go to the computer manufacturer and get it from there. They will often have drivers for several operating systems. Win95 and 98SE didn't always play together well, so I hope you have some luck finding a better fit if that doesn't work. That's a good sized monitor.

I picked it up for AUD$150 at a Lifeline Computer Store. They get donated old stuff no longer wanted, check it out with volunteer labour, and pass the profits on to the charity. US secondhand prices seem to start about US$360, so I am happy. I guess that if you were running a CAD package and no longer needed a monitor like this, you are probably out of business.... :-)

So it's mostly "as is"... I could use it as a "Default". No idea what "package" or manufacturer it came from.

My current ADI 17x+ uses the Win95 inf file - seems OK.

SRS - was surprised that no info turned up direct from Samsung.

You'll find more references under "Syncmaster 20 GLsi" rather than the model number. There are several driver sites with drivers that purport to be compatible, with user reviews of the drivers ranging from very good to useless. Some suggested the 3Ne driver would work.

As SRS mentions above it's not listed in the product support sections of Samsung's own site (it was the first place I looked), but there is a contact email on the site. You could e-mail them and ask them if they can supply you with a driver. (I don't know how helpful a large company would be, but I've had excellent replies from smaller companies when I've e-mailed them about problems).

It's only 1600x1200!

Well it's connected. I installed the inf file in the dnld referred to above before removing the other monitor - Plug & Pray then detected the correct type on reboot which according to the front of the monitor is a 20GLsi. I currently only get 1280x1024 16bit, but the built in display adaptor is the on board Intel 82815 - 4 Mb DXvers1 apparently, so that may be the limiting factor - I do intend to get a plug in upgrade eventually - really want a twin head, although I may be able to keep the Intel working as a second card? Any suggestions - I think it may have AGP - haven't opened the case since I got it - MB is an Intel D815EFV. I don't want to spend a fortune on too hot a card.

The install.exe in the dnld referred to above only wanted to refer to a 20GLs (not the si), so I didn't run it - but it seems to be working OK. Now that it's running Mark - I will prowl some more.

I have a few 'shivers' from time to time, but that may be external interference getting in from the power line- the cord has an inbuilt balun. The ADI used to do that occasionally too. The screen acreage looks great, colour fine, but I intend to run some test SW later on. Much easier on the eyes. Now for that 36"... :-) May be running a little slower, but it's chewing more pixels!

I reset the fiddly bits in the control panel and pushed lots of little buttons to adjust the display - it's easier to adjust than the ADI.

Now the next worry is when I move to XP.... :-)

I more or less followed that stream of consciousness of yours. I have the feeling you're making excessive demands on an older machine. If you're using Win98SE I'm assuming you don't have a brand new machine that you put an old OS on. The question arises: will the new OS (XP Pro is better than XP home, blah blah blah) substantively improve things, if your hardware is so old? Add a few devices to upgrade the old machine and you've about paid for a new one, that's the way of the computing world.

To answer your question about the twin head, is this because you want to use two monitors? My computer had the typical one port for the monitor, but when I went to two monitors to take advantage of a higher resolution flat screen CRT I own, I ended up getting an NVidia card for about $100 (after rebate). It took me some tinkering to get it set up (moving the desktop was more difficult than I thought it would be), but in the end you are best off with both ports on the same card, not on two different cards. I guess I could set another monitor on (I think this system will run up to four of them) the older port, but there's no point in it.

Currently PIII 1Gb 256Mb with the Intel on board video - just on the limit of XP as far as I can figure - a new box is on the future 'wish list'.... but there's thing the guys in the store want called "money"... A laptop would be nice too, of course...

Was saving for a AUD$100 range video card - but would prefer a twinhead... so might be up for more...

I still have my 17" ADI - it is the horizontal/vertical rotation format one - need to update the WinPortrait drivers - it would be the second monitor of choice. Originally bought it for writing - I read a full A4 page at once - not comfortable with these tiny little 'windows' peeking into a document! Main Desktop for the 20" - open documents A4 size on the ADI - sigh - fantasies!

I can't find the box for this card, but once in place it has two ports for monitors and is/uses the NVidia system/stuff. It was about $119.00 and there was a $20 rebate. So it lands in your range, and would allow you to run both monitors and has the software to configure them properly.

Well, Well, Well, I dropped back into that 2nd hand shop, and Lo! now I have a Matrox G400 32 Mb Dual Head! And only $35 poorer! About the same price as a single head card of similar performance/vintage.

It appears to have a /DELL part number, but I cannot find any alleged 'serial number'. It also has a small fan.

I have gone to Matrox, and got the alleged Win98 driver, and looked at the 'unified' drivers, but some files seem to not want to download at moment. I will be waiting a couple of weeks to do a 'hack session' - I have a lot of minor HW twiddling to do which I have been putting off, and I will do it all at once.

Can I get extra memory to upgrade the Matrox eaasily?

I will put the drivers in an easy to find place, shut down, plug in the card, disable the onboard video in the BIOS, and let Plug and Pray find the card, etc.

Any further tips?


BTW, I am getting the 'crawlies' on the new screen (old one did it too) - interference slowly rippling up - possibly due to power line interference - we have 'hot water time switching' pulses here - some are sometimes so strong that my UPS reacts to them. I do have some ferrite clamp ons, but mayme not enough.

I have a pair of them that I use with a Pyramix (Merging Technologies) DAW, running on XP-Pro and they work magnificently!
