What ezzactly is a "guitar pull"? (is that where someone trys to take your guitar away from you?)

I've always thought of it as similar to a song circle where people just trade and share songs.

It might be a 'pull-off', where you have your finger on a string on a fret, and then pull it off, sort of plucking as you go.

Or it could be like a tractor pull, where folks compete to see which guitar can pull the most weight. My money's on the Guild.

Guild is now owned by Fender. A company renowned for not being able to make a decent acoustic guitar.

Somewhere I read that the late Johnny Cash used to host "guitar pulls" at his home. From the description it sounded like a song circle with one guitar that was passed around - or maybe more.

I would take a Mexican made telecaster over anything made by Gibson, unless forced into a corner and then I'd sell the Gibson and buy a truckload of Mexican teles.

To be fair to Martin, I believe he did say acoustic guitars. People who prefer Telecasters are usually electric guitarists...

I have a 45 year old Guild that is equall to any 00 mohog Martin of the same vintage. Guilds of that age have a lot of pull with me right now.

Yeah, Martin did say "acoustic". That doesn't mean he's not an asshole. Just means he's not an asshole all the time. And he's right that Fender's never been able to make much of an acoustic guitar. But, supposedly, Fender kept as many of Guild's craftsmen as could stand the idea of working for Fender and kept production at the same Westerly, RI factory. My Guild 12-string was built after the Fender takeover and it sounds better than any recent Martin or Taylor 12-string I've played.

But what all this has to do with "guitar pull" is beyond me. I have no idea what "guitar pull" is, but here are some possibilities:

Maybe it's supposed to be "guitar pool". Les mentioned Johnny Cash, and I believe Cash had a guitar-shaped pool. Maybe John and his buds would soak a few D-45s in the pool to loosen the glue and then see who could pull one apart the quickest.

Or maybe it's a condition where the guitar's producing more bass or treble notes than you're playing. Like when a car pulls to the left or the right. Take your axe to your repair guy and tell him it's "pulling to the bass side" and see what he says.

Or maybe it's related to pulling one's pud. Sorta like the guy who thinks he knows how to play but is, in reality, the only person in the world who can stand to listen to himself. For further explanation, see "wanking".

Is it the power of the guitar you are playing ( or of your guitar playing) to attract suitors? There's an ad for a guitar around now whose line is, "Got the guitar.....got the gig....got the girl" ....

Back to the original question. The few times I've heard the term "guitar pull," it has meant a leaderless round robin jam session, one where everyone in turn gets to call the song or tune.

There was a Louisville, KY songwriter's group that held regular guitar pulls. I believe it meant that song circle had one guitar passed around and everyone played one of their songs when it was their turn. Sort of a one instrument song circle. Makes sense from a perspective of wanting people to listen to a new song. Not as much sense if you want to have people play along with your songs. I find the term itself interesting. If you can imagine one person finishing up their song and the next person getting the guitar to play his, before the last notes had faded from the last song. I should mention, I never went to one, so I could be wrong.
