Subject: Tech: MIDItext Help!!!!!!!!!!!
From: GUEST,Doxy

Hi All you out there,
I keep seeing tantalising lists of red numbers on threads that promise me they are tunes if I only get hold of MIDItext98. Sadly the link doesn't seem to work and when I've searched for it by name I come up with a french site that says it is suspended by 'Order'. Can any one help? Is there an ABC converter that will turn ABC stuff into Midi files?.
It's so sad to see all those potential tunes & not to be able to get at 'em,
Rescue me from my frustration & technical incompetence please!
Cheers Doxy

you can cut and paste the ABC portions of the miditxt into Concertina.net's converter

If you would like to e-mail me A lpola@edutech.org I have a copy of miditxt I could attach on a return e-mail.

I have an "abc2mid" on my machine, but it's been so long since I've used it I don't remember for sure what it's for. Most likely it came from the "abc" website. They have quite an extensive list of downloadable stuff.

The link that the mid2txt converter inserts in the result has been out of date for several years. A newer link was posted in the mudcat FAQ and in multiple threads, but I haven't heard whether it's still good. The site, at Mudcat Users Download appears to still be up.

I've been trying to replace all the MIDItext tunes to MIDI files, but it's a slow process - and it's stalled right now because MIDI FTP is broken and I can't upload MIDI files. You can contact MMario or me for MIDIs, and it looks like John in Kansas has volunteered himself to convert them, too (right, John?).
You can contact any of us by personal message if you're a registered Mudcatter, or you can e-mail me at joe-offer@msn.com.

You can get an abc to midi converter (one of many) from Sourceforge: abcMIDI

John, I think you mean abc2midi. If so, it is part of AbcMIDI.

abc2midi - converts abc file to MIDI file(s).
Usage : abc2midi [reference number] [-c] [-v] [-o filename]
       [-t] [-n ]
       [reference number] selects a tune
       -c selects checking only
       -v selects verbose option
       -o selects output filename
-t selects filenames derived from tune titles
-n set limit for length of filename stem
The default action is to write a MIDI file for each abc tune
with the filename <stem>N.mid, where <stem> is the filestem
of the abc file and N is the tune reference number. If the -o
option is used, only one file is written. This is the tune
specified by the reference number or, if no reference number
is given, the first tune in the file.

Jon -

As mentioned, I haven't done much of anything with abc lately. I have a file abc2mid.exe on the machine. That's about all I can say on the subject.

Joe -

You probably haven't got the last 50 files we sent as .mid posted. Sure (maybe) we can help, but right now I'm at the door to go to WVA, so I won't have much access to anything not related to sittin' in the dew and pickin' until about 01 OCT. No web connection in the campground.

John

My program HARMONY (for Windows only) will read abc and export to MIDI. (You can also edit it between import and export)

Also, if there is a demand, I could easily write a MIDItext import. MIDItext only allows very simple tune structure, as far as I can see.

Harmony can be downloaded from my web site:

Hi,
Thanks for all the help.

MMario, I tried to email you but the old mailer deamon sent it back. My email is Trimrigdoxy@aol.com it would be great if you could send me a copy of MIDItext and any helpful advice or 'destructions' on how to use it.

John, I tried the links..........there's nothing behind the first page I'm afraid.

Looking forward to having even more music to mes around with,
Cheers,
Doxy

I tired the MIDItext website, http://miditext.8m.net/ and successfully downloaded MIDItext.exe.
I tried to e-mail a MIDI to Doxy, but my e-mail didn't go through.

John in Kansas, I think I have uploaded most of the MIDI files people have sent me, but I get behind and tend to forget when Mudcat MIDI FTP is down (which has happened a lot lately). If you send me MIDI files, try to put MIDI in the e-mail message title.

Joe -

It's been quite a while since we sent anything, and I think they actually went mostly to MMario. They probably are mostly up by now. I was just wigglin' the needle a bit. We did send quite a few (small hundreds) things, but we've just about scraped the bottom of our large (but very repetitious) collection. It gets discouraging when nobody wants to know about all that other junk we've got - and everything they need to know is already on the 'cat.

An additional complication - since I lost my last surviving Win98 machine I can't run my favorite notation program, so I'm in the "functionally impaired" category for creating files.

John
