SUSSEX All-day SINGAROUND

Saturday 21st. January 2006, 11.00 a.m. – 11.00 p.m.

The Royal Oak, High Street, Barcombe (near Lewes) East Sussex BN8 5BA

Free admission – pub food on sale all day.

The day begins with an hour of informal tunes while people arrive. After that the singing starts, finishing with a good hour of glorious choruses. Ballads and the occasional instrumental party piece will be very welcome too.

This used to be known as 'Firle Folk Day' for historic reasons and was held for many years at the Ram Inn, Firle, but as the pub's character has changed drastically and it no longer welcomes music we (Lewes Arms Folk Club) are moving the event to the Royal Oak at Barcombe, some three miles north of Lewes. We shall be in the large ground floor skittle alley, which has good acoustics and is larger than the bar in the Ram. The pub has good reasonably-priced food, Harveys Best and Old, and we can keep the room non-smoking for the day.

BALLAD COME-ALL YE

Sunday 22nd. January 2006, noon - 5.00 p.m.

The Lewes Arms, Mount Place, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 1YH

Free admission – pub food on sale throughout.

This is specifically for ballads; if in doubt about what counts as a ballad, ask for guidance.

It follows the terrific success of the all-day ballad forum led by Craig:Morgan;Robson at the Lewes Arms earlier this month. Looking a long way ahead, Brian Peters will be leading another all-day ballad forum on Sunday 3rd. December next year after an all-day melodeon workshop on the Saturday.

Hills,

Yes the point was to get it in peoples diaries.

There may be a spare room at a house in Brighton, if our current paying guest has moved on by then, or even a floor for your sleeping bag(s)

PM or email nearer the time.

Dave Earl

Sorry, we can't make it for 'Firle' this year but we'll be back to Sussex for Ashurst in February.   See some of you sooner than that I hope on the 12 November at Lewes.

A much nicer venue than The Ram (in some ways). Much more comfortable and plenty of seats, good beer (well if it's Harvey's it's gotta be good) & decent food at a reasonable price. I personally didn't miss the scrum at the bar, cramped seating and freezing feet but some did. It was also very pleasant to have it non-smoking, yes I know I used to be one of those making life miserable for all the non-smokers, much better.

Well we of the Lewes Arms Folk Club also enjoyed the day.

So much so that we have booked the same venue for Jan 20 2007.

Note for inclusion in your diaries for next year.
