After many wonderful years in Nottingham, UK, the club, run by Ruth Cooper, is to close on Dec 3rd 2005. This is due to difficulty in finding suitable venues on a Saturday night. A recent change in landlord at the Plough & Nags Head, Stapleford has made the current venue for the past 5 yaers untenable. The last guest was Sheila Stewart (19th Nov)and it will be party time on the third. Many of you UK (& several US) folks will have popped in to the club sometime over the years to hear special guests and local talent. Ruth was renowned for bringing over to the UK many guests from the US who might not have otherwise ventured to the UK. It is a major blow for the East Midlands folk scene, but there are still other venues locally (on other nights). I'm sure you will all join me in wishing Ruth well for the future and thank her for her untiring efforts in supporting the local folk scene.

Very sorry to hear it - I have fond memories of her Nottingham club (though it was years ago) as well as the one before that, in Catford (London), which was really my introduction to the British folk scene. Wishing Ruth all the best in whatever she does -

Shame really, with my newly obtained driving license, this was one of the clubs I was hoping to visit soon.

I can empathise slightly, I managed to hold down a venue for the club I co-ran last year for a mighty 8 months, but sadly it was not to be.
Thanks for flying the flag for as long as you did Ruth, even though I never made it down there.

I used to quite like it when it was in Brinsley at The Robin Hood pub. Although it was difficult for my disabled wife to get up and down the stairs. Then I started doing gigs on Saturday nights so I it moved when I wasn't looking.

I went a few times to the other venues but it all seemed not quite so good, not so cosy. it was very democratic club with some people reading songs from exercise books. Ruth Cooper did a remarkable job - keeping it going so long. It wouldn't have suited evrybody, but it seemed to suit a lot of people. I'm surprised one of the faithfgul doesn't want to keep it going - like I say they seemed very enthusiastic - always clued up about the latest folk song trends.

I believe there are other clubs in Nottingam - I hope they're doing well.

What a shame! We had a wonderful night there - the audience was so welcoming. Thanks to Ruth and everyone for inviting us. I really wonder what is wrong with pub landlords these days, not wanting regular , well-behaved customers.

It is a tragedy that another Nottingham club, especially one that has been running for so long, is forced to close under these circumstances. I always enjoyed going and was always made to feel welcome. We have maintained a good relationship with Ruth and the other members of The Robin Hood over the years and they know that they will be made equally welcome just up the road at Traditions at the Tiger whenever they feel like visiting us.

Talking of Traditions at the Tiger (monthly club, sunday eves), it is the very same venue that is now to host a revived ROBIN HOOD FOLK CLUB running on the SECOND and FOURTH SATURDAYS each month under the auspesies of regulars Phil, Chris & Glyn. I am pleased to have attended the opening night (14th Jan) accompanied by several regulars plus many faces new to the Robin Hood who enjoyed an excellant evenings entertainment of live music in the good old fashioned British folk club way, going round the room (twice). Singers outnumbered non-singers which is a good sign as to the quality and interest in the British folk "scene". Saturday nights are difficult as function rooms are often in demand for that other kind of joy, the Disco, but the room at the Tiger Inn, Tamworth Road, Long Eaton is most acceptable. If you're ever around Nottingham on a Saturday night, do look us up, but please remember, it is the 2nd & 4th Sats.

Well Done to Dave at the Tiger in Long Eaton. It now hosts not 2 but 3 Music Clubs. Apart form the Traditions at the Tiger & now the Robin Hood Folk club mentioned above there is also The Spinning Jenny Folk Club which is held monthly on a Friday night. (Usually the 3rd or 4h) of the month. The Spinning Jenny is an open mic format and although described as "folk" tends to have a very varied range of musical styles. The next Spinning Jenny will be held on 27th Jan 2006. I look forward to popping into the Robin Hood FC in the near future. Best of luck in your new venue.

Good to hear the news. I got there once last April, and hope to get there again this April (Revenue & Customs Winter sports weekend @ Nottingham Univ. I'm not going to the Disco!)
