I found these lyrics posted from an earlier thread here on the Mudcat. I'd appreciate it if anyone can provide the origins of it.

Near Saint John's town
the wind blows cold
on winter eve'nings
so I'm told
And tears the heart
Where spirits rest
And tears the heart
From my lover's breast

I met her there at the Loyalist's fairground
Her summer kiss, and heart aglow
My Annie's love lit the fire of hope for
This St John lad and his Grand Bay jo

The summer passed
And November tarried
Now the ice forms massed
And the cold wind carried
We fought our way
To bring our ship home
Near the Bay of Fundy
Slipped beneath the foam

But I see her face at the Loyalist's fairground
Her summer kiss, and heart aglow
My Annie's love lit the fire of hope for
This St John lad and his Grand Bay jo

That's a keeper---as much for what it doesn't say as for what it does tell us. A poetic, real enigma! And that's why I'm gonna save it.

Thanks,

Art

It may actually have been written by Jed, he does a lot of that: Jed's website.

I found the other thread and it's interesing. I suspect like Katlaughing that it's a Jed original. For those interested in the preamble to the song: Mudcat Island Thread

Guess you'll have to e-mail or PM Jed.

I agree this is a fine song, has a good traditional feel to it and leaves a lot to the imagination but clearly the ship went down...

I'd like to know more about it.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, who hardly needs another tragic sea song

Thanks for the feedback ... the lyrics are beautiful ... I find it even more intriguing as I live in Saint John and am very familiar with the communiy and area of Grand Bay and the the Bay Fundy itself.

I'll check out Jed's website and hopefully will obtain the origins and melody. Will keep you posted.

It certainly is a keeper regardless.

In case you haven't seen it, Charley, Waves of Sorrow, as sung by Alba, is another sad sea song. :-)

"The summer passed

Very moving ... 2 winters ago a fishing boat went down with the tragic loss of it's crew of 4 while sailing from Campobello Is. to Maces Bay.

If there is no melody to it, then does that make it a poem instead?
