My bid for a concertina on ebay was not the winner BUT after the auction I was approached by email with an offer to buy it at my bid price. Just to make certain, I emailed the original seller of the instument, who assured me that the concertina had indeed been sold.
This has all been reported to ebay, but PLEASE be aware that there are unscrupulous people out there, and if it looks too good to be true it usually is.
A very good friend recently had an almost identical experience...........Have you???

Yes this happened to us too, for a Concertina, looks like a geuine offer but on closer inspection it isnt the origional seller, or the person who 'won' the auction who is offering it. The clincher is the request for payment by western union.. It appears that high priced items and concertina's fall into that category making an easy target.

Both of the instances of these frauds were reported to EBAY with the usual lack of response. One from America was reported to the FBI who did respond. I could tell you what they said but then I would have to kill you.. ;-)

Be on the lookout friends.

GM

There was a bit of talk about dubious concertinas on ebay on uk.music.folk in May this year. I don't know if it is related.

See this thread

Same thing happened to me last year - I also checked with the seller as I noticed the email addy was different. In the next 2 days I had another 5 or 6 similar emails, all from different people. I reported them all to ebay. If it is still going on it would appear they can't do anything about it.

I think the problem is that it is too easy to join, so anybody can join under another name any time. Same thing with negative feedback - they just discontinue their negative membership and re-join under another name.

cheers, Terry

Note that similar things happen even "off the web." We advertised a small loom and a bass guitar in the local newspaper's free "quick ads" a few months ago. We received about seven identical offers, each for one or the other of the items wanting to send us a money order which we were to cash and forward the shipping fees to an agent (to be identified) who would pick up the items from us.

Can we all spell C.O.U.N.T.E.R.F.E.I.T. M.O.N.E.Y. O.R.D.E.R ?

Referred to local police, but no results reported back to us.

Anybody really want to buy a loom?

John

This has been going on for ages. It's an obvious scam as the seller/email is different everytime. If anyone ACTUALLY falls for it; sucker!

Be careful out there

Just had something similar with a violin on Ebay... still in the process of investigating, but it looks bogus.

HOW - do "They" figure out who you are and where to e-mail the bogus offer.

Is E-Bay totally open source?

Oh yea - been there done that.

I was alerted, here, to that trick, long before I 'Bayed.

When I wanted a swish remote I spent a lot of time bidding light and ventured to near the selling price once. Sure enough a stranger had the same kind of device and would sell it at my bid price. He offered for to let me pick it up in central London. Yea - right!
I suggested he put it on E-bay and he would get a better price, and if I didn't see it there I would figure my assumption was correct. It didn't appear.

When you have a purchase record of zilch they assume you are not street wise. Without the Mudcat that could have been the case.

One way to fob them off is to claim you only deal through PayPal. & offer to pay the extra for the guarrantee service. If they are genuine they will still deal.
