Subject: An Honor for Any Song
From: Dan Schatz

This past week I received an e-mail from a DJ at WBCZ in New Jersey, who had been reviewing a sampler CD from Oasis. He told me that one of their DJs - Kevin O'Hara - had died suddenly over the weekend, and that he wanted to use my song "Leave Time" to start off a special tribute this Saturday morning, as the station remembers their lost friend. What an amazing honor.

That is an honor indeed Dan.
Sounds like your song touches other Folk's Hearts and that is a special talent you have.
Best Wishes to you,
Jude

Congratulations. Any song that can provoke that type of response has to have been worth writing.

Would you mind posting the lyrics, Dan? I think we'd all like to read them.

Dan is a good songwriter. I sing one of his songs that I learned at a Getaway, Daylight's Song, with his permission, of course. (Suddenly it occurs to me that the title is actually something else. Sorry, Dan. It's a great song, though.)

Thanks for the good words, folks.

Ebbie, I'm glad you like "Daylight's Song" - and yes, that is the title. I'm always honored when anyone wants to sing one of my songs.

I posted the lyrics and links to some sound clips on a separate "lyr add" thread. In case that link doesn't work or you can't find it, the lyrics to some of my songs, that one included, are at www.danschatz.com.

I was especially touched because the show "Leave Time" was featured on is a bluegrass hour, and my music is very off-format for that. The DJ who wrote me said he liked it because Kevin had always made sure to leave time for his friends.

Just listened to your song. No surprise he asked to use it. What a beautiful song. I'll bet your little one loves hearing you sing. What an honour, indeed.

Thanks,

kat

Hello Dan,
This is Joseph from Ireland,I have just read the lyrics and heard the song which you kindly put on the site for us all to here.
What an honour for any song writer to be recognised and requested.
Iwould Sing at funerls at times and with your kind permission I shall learn this one and add it to my repertoire.

Joseph, permission is hereby granted for you and anybody else to sing my songs. I'm sure shipping the CD itself overseas is costly, but the whole thing is downloadable through i-tunes, DigStation and several other sites if you want it. The CD itself has lyrics, but those are also on the website.

As I said, it's a thrill to know that someone likes one of my songs enough to learn it. I think the greatest goal any folk songwriter can hope to achieve is to contribute to the tradition.

Kat, you asked if my little one enjoys hearing me sing. He does seem to like all kinds of music - he's already sat through a Cephas and Wiggins performance and a sitar concert. It's encouraging for a folkie dad to see!

Congratulations from me too. I think that when people start singing your song and feeling it is their song... Then you have reached the point that you know you are not just singing to yourself.
