Just a heads-up that due to a change of landlord (and hence a change of attitude towards live folk music) the Lostwithiel Folk Jam will no longer be held at the Earl of Chatham on a Wednesday, but at the King's Arms in Fore Street on a Tuesday. They have been very receptive to the idea of hosting us, and will welcome you with open arms, as will we!
Hope to see some of you there at some point!
go well.

Can you give us more details, please. Is it jut music session or singing as well? Most of the sesssions around here are music only and Lostwithiel is only half an hour away on a tourist sesason night, less in winter. Time?

Oh definitely singing as well! we wouldn't have it any other way! we have un/accompanied singers, Just Plain Musicians (!!!) and generally a good laugh - come on down - it would be great to see you!
We will kick off at 8.30, but get more-or-less stuck in at 9 - half-an-hour for tuning(!) catching up and getting the beer in...
Where are you that you can say 'most of the sessions' and be only half an hour away? I'm intrigued!

No doubt Kimsky, as I must get used to calling her, will be updating this thread with positive reports of last night's inaugural session in our new home at the King's Arms, but knowing how busy she is, and keen to encourage Cats (and anyone else in the vicinity) to pop along and check the session out, I thought I'd dive in first and say I thought it went brilliantly and I was delighted at how many of us turned out and the warmth of the welcome from Mick and Kathy, the licensees, who even made unprompted mention of free drinks! We were good, but were we that good? Apparently so. I couldn't be happier (plus it's only a 42-second walk from my house).

Bugger!!
Only just up the line from Plymouth!
Though to be honest, with a stupid o'clock early start, I'd not have been able to attend for more than a ½hour!

I love this - here I am, sitting having breakfast at the cafe, just coming up to 8am NZ time and you will no doubt be there at the session already, singing your hearts out.
It's almost like being there with you instead of half a world away!
Keep 'er ga'in!!
Robyn

I too can vouch for the excellent new venue for the Losty Jam. They even welcome percussion!!!!!

BTW, Millie the Dog has reservations about encouraging Cats but I'm sure if Cats brings her a biscuit they'll be best buddies in no time!

Hi Kimsky. Just noticed this thread whilst researching the background to the Earl of Chatham now that we finally have internet access. In the absence of any other way of communicating to you all I hope you won't mind me commenting and clarifying that we thoroughly enjoyed the folk jam sessions but couldn't justify the free drinks when (a) the turnout of customers coming into listen was, as you will agree quite low (however, this could be attributed to us just taking over or the fact that the pub is on the opposite side of town and not very well advertised but we are starting to rectify that, or as with everything else, these things have a shelf life and many of our locals (not all of course) were just not as receptive of the folk jam as they once were. We did provide free drinks but there was an in balance in turnover on the Wednesday night and we suggested that if people came into listen then we would continue the free drinks - unfortunately for the last 4 weeks this has not happened. I can assure you that our attitude towards you all was very positive and we did enjoy listening to the music you all play. I have been known to partake in folk jam sessions in and around Saddleworth on a regular basis. We didn't know percussion was an issue and this must have been something declined by the previous landlord but if anyone would have told us that this was an issue we would have welcomed percussion as I am not aware of anything preventing it here and we have the appropriate licences, also I most certainly would have joined in at some point in the near future. It is highly unfortunate that the Earl of Chatham has now lost a tradition and you have removed yourselves from a venue you have played at for many a year, we were somewhat shocked to find a post-it on the door on Thursday morning when we returned from a family members funeral - however judging from the positive feedback on your first night at the Kings it seems all is going well and we sincerely wish you the best of luck there. "Sometimes a change is as good as a rest" Or so they say - but if for any reason things do not work out there - the doors to the Earl of Chatham are open to you all. I am in the middle of arranging a new website and had given the folk night its own page. We plan to advertise the Earl of Chatham Inn and its activities, nationally, in particular on sites such as, Laterooms, Tripadvisor, Sugarvine, press adverts, etc. Once again good luck to all, Kathy and Mick are from our experience excellent hosts and as you are now more than aware we are still finding out feet. I sincerely hope that there is no bad feeling and hope that you share this email with the rest of the guys and girls with sincere apologies. We are sorry that you felt we were not receptive and that our intentions were either miscommunicated or misunderstood. Regards & Best Wishes Sharon & Peter

looking forward to another good one tonight - and hoping to see you all there - including the mysterious Tony...(Mr Taylor, perhaps? never knowingly attended, but always welcome, nonetheless!).
Regarding the decision to change the venue, I think we all felt that when Peter was asked directly if he wanted the folk session at the Chatham - and the answer was "for now", that we'd better jump before we were pushed.
We have enjoyed the Chatham sessions over the years, especially in the holidays when there's sometimes been standing room only - and we've enjoyed meeting and listening to the variety of music from visitors from far and wee. We'll hope to see you again, but at the King's Arms!
And Sue Gorgeous - Lostwithiel IS lovely....!

What an interesting post from 'Landlady of the Earl of Chatham'!
We don't mind you commenting at all, frankly, now that Shameless is no longer on channel 4 it gives us a much needed injection of gritty Northern humour!

Let me quote 'I can assure you that our attitude towards you all was very positive and we did enjoy listening to the music you all play'
why oh why then did the landlord appear completely indifferent to our presence, even though just a couple of weeks before we had provided a room full of customers (and musicians)all having a bloody good session in his newly acquired (managed) pub?
As for your comments re. percussionm being an issue?? in the past it's always been the Harmonium players that started the fights, percussionists only being brought in as a last resort to restore order!

It's a shame that the chatham has, as you say 'lost a tradition' and it's true that it has lost the tradition of people walking through the door, buying a drink and enjoying themselves. I'm so pleased that you have been able to feel a part of the Saddleworth folk sessions as I hope they will welcome you back when you realise that Cornwall isn't quite working out for you!

There is no bad feeling from us, we have discovered the Kings Arms, a gem of a pub that welcomes us with open arms. The fact that we took with us a nubmber of non musical former Chatham regulars speaks volumes!
