I used to listen to a local radio show on our local public broadcasting station that played folk music, but they cancelled it. I was wondering if anybody knew of any radio shows of that type in or around the Central Illinois area or where I might look?

If the breezes are fair you might get KDHX from St. Louis, our fine community supported station. 88.1 on the dial ("all the way to the Left") I've listened to it in my car, comes in til I get to about Springfield. You can get it on the internet, too, if you have the sound stuff on your computer: kdhxfm88.org is their website w/schedule of programs.

Say, would it be thread creep to ask what other folk music radio might be on the web, or is that the business of another whole thread line? I'll bet somebody'll tell me it's been done already.

Can someone explain these KDHX letter combination?
I noticed that many (all?) US radio stations have such a letter combination, most with a K or a W (I think these are TV stations) in it.
Does the letter combination depend on the frequency the station is sending?

Hi, MudGuard - Call letters beginning with "W" are in the U.S., east of the Mississippi; and those beginning with "K" are in the West. "C" is Canada, and "X" Mexico.

To answer your question about music on the web, these aren't all always folk, but they'll get you started:

Canadian (CBC) here

our own Rick Fielding's show, Acoustic Workshop can be heard Monday evening at 9pm EDT on CIUT here

there are three different stations available here, which include world music, bosnian music, and an ecletic mix at Web Radio

and this is a fantastic site for all music native American, contemporary to traditional at AIROS

I've got one more bookmarked, but haven't been to it in a while so don't know what it has. It is at Netradio Network

I know there are more for folk, but don't have them handy.

maybe this will make up for the one that didn't work: I typed in "folk music radio on line" and came up with several, but the one with the most listings was this alphabetical listing of programs from all over

There were several others which came up, but I dind't want to handwrite each address to remember it to put in here. When I get time, I'll try to add a few more.

Joe has it right (as usual), but let me add my two cents worth. The rest of the letters were often selected by the station (the same naming system is used for both TV and radio). So here in Baltimore, Maryland we have WBAL (radio and TV) where the BAL was chosen to represent BALtimore. A public radio station is WTMD. It broadcasted, originally from Towson, MD (where MD is the abbreviation for Maryland). Sometimes stations chose the letters to give it a certain "sound" or to spell a certain word. I think there is a West Coast Rock and Roll radio station that uses the letters KROC (for K Rock!).

Kat -- the list you sent us to is a good one, but lacks my favorite on-line folk radio link -- www.wksu.org -- Kent State University Radio has folk shows every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening (all evening) available live or archived...great blend of trad, S/S, bluegrass. And with Real Audio's new G2 player (free download) the sound quiality is quite good.

There was a thread some time ago that focused on folk music on the net.

Search on "Update of Audio Folk Music on the Web" in the forum search to find it.

It lists Jim Lessis Great web site that has more links to folk radio than you can shate a stick at.

last WMMT in Kentucky just started broadcasting on Broadcast.com. They use the Microsoft Media Player though and I can't listen to them at work. The Broadcast.com link is

WLS in Chicago was started by Sears, Roebuck & Company, the World's Largest Store. An underground station I used to like in Sacramento was KZAP, which changed its great name to KYCT for a short couple of years while it tried the "young country" format - but it apparently lost the KZAP monicker forever. KFOG, an apt name for a radio station in San Francisco, is still going strong.
Our friend Gene says that there's a station in San Antonio, Texas, (west of the Mississippi) named WOAI, so there are exceptions to the rule.
