BBC - Country Meets Folk - 1&2 (1970s) [RadioRip(mp3)]

This was recorded sometime in the 1970s. Country Meets Folk was a long running from the 1960s to the at least the 1970s. It was invariably recorded at the Playhouse Theatre near Charing Cross compered by Wally Whyton. Brian Brocklehurst was the supporting session bass player. Free tickets were available for the Friday sessions, which were then aired on Saturday evenings on the BBC Light Programme. Versions were issued on transcription disks distributed to many overseas broadcasting companies such as the NZBC. There are no known recordings in the public domain.

An associated programme also compered by Wally Whyton was aired on the BBC World Service called 'Folk & Country British Style.' Only one known copy survives (recorded from short wave).

Did quite a few with both Nick Strutt and later with Pete Stanley. Don't have any recordings left I'm afraid.
They were good times.

I used to listen quite often. I also remember that it was popularly known on the folk scene as 'Country Swamps Folk'.

We, " Four Square Circle", did two lives shows on June 68 and Jan 69. One with Wally Whyton the other with Malcolm Price and our producer was Ian Grant. Brian Brocklehurst was also on hand to play his double bass if needed. The last time we saw him was being driven away from the theatre in an open top Citroen 2CV with the fingerboard of the bass proudly showing at the helm. Unfortunately none of us had decent recording equipment then.

I used to go it every week - Saturday afternoon if I remember - because I ran the BBC Folk Club in those days and we got half a dozen or so free tickets for each programme.

I remember Brocklehurst well - he used to strap his bass across his back and cycle to gigs in all weathers, check shirt flapping in the wind and pipe clamped firmly in mouth.

When the show was finished, we used to troop up the road to the Sherlock Holmes pub for a pint or three.

Brock died several years ago; largely un-noticed, but I did put a post on here at the time.

As for the "bluegrass instrumental" intro; from what I remember, this was simply a standard G run and I also recall once meeting a man who claimed to have recorded it. The intvening decades have removed his name from my memory.

I have three tracks by the New Deal String Band : Tom Paley, Joe Locker and Janet Kerr. Somebody bought the tracks at an auction and made copies.

The Marsden Rattlers band did one of these shows in the arly 70s- I do remember Bob Davenport's idea to do 'Memphis Tennessee' being rejected as neither country nor folk- you can imagine Bob's reaction to that....
