Today, May 3, 2023, Welsh folksinger Mary Hopkin is 73 years old.
Of course famous for her song, "Those Were the Days."
I had about three of her albums and played them constantly.
Hope you have a lovely birthday Mary.

Are you planning to do a birthday thread for everyone whose album you own?

I keep getting timed out, so I'll try again.   Mary has a new single and CD out - the album Two Hearts, recorded along with her daughter Jessica Lee Morgan. Issued on the 3rd of May.   She shuns the limelight, but the first interview recorded with her in many years, is on youtube. She only gave the interview to her daughter and won't speak to journalists.

I have the same problem, Rossey. I've tried about six times to send a post to this thread, and ] either get timed out or it simply doesn't take. It's a bit annoying when you've spent fifteen or twenty minutes composing yer post...

Yep Steve, I tried starting a new thread, updating on Mary's recent activities.. but just wasted my time, as 'internal server error' crops up.
Two or three lines work.. anything else currently sends it loopy.

Iremember she sang Turn! Turn! Turn! on Opportunity Knocks. She was sat down wearing a mini skirt. Sadly it was long before video recorders. my cousin was so impressed, he went straight out and bought six postcards to vote for her ....more a vote for a few flashes of the promised land than anything. Still those were the times.

Big Al you can find her opp. knocks stuff on 'youtube', along with many other appearances.   Alas many people just seem to post the same videos again, and again.    Mary is still recording with her new album and several others on the go. She doesn't fit in pigeon holes, so although some stuff she writes is folky in feel, her latest promo single is more pop/rock (co-written and performed with her daughter Jessica Lee Morgan)   Mary had=s gone a bit Greta Garbo on the media appearance front, but still does her own thing, and is quite happy to interact on Twitter.

I believe Ralph McTell was on Tempa Harbour and also the album she did with her first husband producing.

McTell fans are very loyal and completist. If she mentioned it on Ralph's site I bet it would shift a few thousand albums.

Here's the post I tried to post on 4 May. I'm glad that Opportunity Knocks has been mentioned!

Yertis:

I have an exceptionally tenuous link to Mary Hopkin. My best mate at school was a prodigiously brilliant piano accordion player (he was a Polish lad who played mainly for dances at the various Polish clubs around Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and the like, but he was also a virtuoso when it came to classical pieces adapted for the accordion - whilst still at Thornleigh he travelled to Russia to take part in the world championships and came eighth in the world!) Anyway, for his sins he went on Opportunity Knocks with Hughie Green whilst still a teenager. If my memory serves me well, he won one week and went on for a second time - up against Mary Hopkin that time, who beat him into second place! Clapometer, anyone? :-)

I'm still in touch with him. He plays just for his own pleasure these days and is currently very interested in tango, the music of Astor Piazzolla, which I also love! Libertango!
