Subject: Folk music near Basingstoke? From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 18 Oct 00 - 11:17 AM My daughter married a British guy and just got her residency papers and emigrated. They start a job in the vicinity of Basingstoke tomorrow. Anybody know of folk music happenings in that region? She's not a musician, but a lover of the music (and hopes to get her husband indoctrinated...). |
Subject: RE: Folk music near Basingstoke? From: KingBrilliant Date: 18 Oct 00 - 11:44 AM I live in Reading which is fairly near Basingstoke. There's plenty going on around Reading, and I'm sure there's a lot going on even closer to Basingstoke - Morticia & Gomez would likely know, unless my geography is really naff I think they live somewhere that way. Near Reading there are: Saturday evening singarounds/musicianny things at The Swan pub at Three Mile Cross. Sunday evening folk club (Readifolk) at The Lion pub in Great Knolly's Street in the centre of Reading. Sunday afternoons there is a session/singaround thing in a pub which has something to do with Queen in the title (I'll post the exact name later) Thursday evenings I think there's something in The Retreat pub in the centre of Reading. I'm sure there are loads more, that's just the ones I know about. I'll see if I can find out about anything actually in Basingstoke, unless there is someone closer who posts soon. Would be nice to meet up with them. Are they Mudcatters too? Cheers Kris |
Subject: RE: Folk music near Basingstoke? From: GeorgeH Date: 18 Oct 00 - 11:58 AM A posting to uk.musc.folk is likely to turn up a lot more activity . . That area used to be outstanding for choice in Folk . . Farnham Folk Club (whose organiser some feel went on to greater things, IIRC) and West End Centre in Aldershot are probably still worth checking out. As are the Godalming Ceilidhs, which I think are still going on. And I seem to recall a number of activities in Guildford. Plus you're in easy reach of London, especially anything on the South Bank. Subject: RE: Folk music near Basingstoke? From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 18 Oct 00 - 12:41 PM Wow! Thanks for all the help, so quick! Kris, my information is second hand and sketchy, so far. My daughter's married name is Carla Lloyd; her husband is Roy. They'll be working at a small hotel in Chineham, which I found just outside Basingstoke on my map. She cooks, he bartends/manages. She hasn't had much internet access over the past couple of years, so isn't likely to have done Mudcat yet. She spent two years on a Commonwealth work visa, roughly half of it in West Cork (where her visa was superfluous) and half in Orkney. Came back to Canada to get married, then back to the U.K. as soon as her papers came through. She's been a folk festival volunteer and sometime employee since her teens, enjoys the music but doesn't play it, has taken courses in Arts Management as well. Maybe she'll be able to get involved in something there. I hope you can get together at some point. |
Subject: RE: Folk music near Basingstoke? From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 18 Oct 00 - 01:19 PM Oops! It was Shetland, not Orkney, for the record. Roy was working on the Aberdeen-Lerwick ferry at the time. My mistake... |

Subject: RE: Folk music near Basingstoke? From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 19 Oct 00 - 04:01 PM Being still a lowly guest (by choice, for reasons I won't go into at the moment), I don't have the capacity to contact people personally. However, I don't mind airing my email address. People who want to send me addresses, etc., for me to pass on to Roy and Carla (when she's able to accesss her email) by means other than this forum can contact me at john.leeder@carswell.com. Again, thanks everyone for the help. My daughter is a stranger in a strange land (well, is it really?), but may not be so for long. |
