Saw the movie on opening night and have been waiting ever since for a thread on it. What a howl, and what a great choice of old music (I always like the old music better than the new). What did you-all think, musically or otherwise?

The old (as in, not written just for the movie) songs that were in the sound track, O Enquiring Mind. I am having a terrible time finding out what they were, I knew them as they were playing and now cannot remember what they were. Something about (the image just flitted back out of my brain. I had an image... something crazy? Boy I hate that!)... what WAS the music, anyway? Opening credit song, great googly moogly who took my brain? I need it back, please!

I just saw it yesterday with the whole family. It was GREAT! I highly recommend it to adults even if you don't have children to take with you.
The songs were fabulous and I especially liked "Hallelujah"...very pretty. I plan on buying the CD.
P.S. It was almost embarassing how loud my husband laughed in some parts but then again he does work at Disneyland. A lot of good pokes at Disney. ;-)

We have two old movie palaces from the 1930's here in our downtown. They are completely renovated with upgraded sound and screens. Their owners just renovated another old building downtown and put up 4 more cinemas, 3 years ago, and now have done another with 8 cinemas. For their grand opening, this w/end, they will be showing Pearl Harbour and Shrek at all of the downtown theatres. They are expecting sell-out crowds from what I hear. It will be fun to see it in one of the old ones.

The only really "old" songs were Smash Mouth's funky cover of "I'm a Believer" by the Monkees, and a cover of "Bad Reputation," originally by Joan Jett.

But I must say, I was THRILLED to see the song "You Belong To Me" by Jason Wade, of the band Lifehouse. Jason & Lifehouse write beautiful singer/songwriter rock that isn't whiny. Jason loves throwing in cellos, violins, mandolins, banjos, and lots of acoustic guitars in to his music. Their album No Name Face is defining the relationship that me and me girlfriend share. Especially the last song on the album "Everything". I can't wait to learn "You Belong To Me" and sing it for her tonight...

I've been reading some of the reviews on Amazon.com, apparently people were upset at the adult levels??? MY kids didn't get half that stuff!

I gotta admit there were a lot of ass jokes (eddie murphy's character was a donkey) and a very few other curses...I think people would probably be concerned about their kids repeating lines, over and over and over again, as kids are wont to do

I took my kids (6 and 10 years old). They liked it although I doubt my six year old got half the jokes. My ten year old got maybe two-thirds of them. I don't remember cringing at any point thinking, "Oh no! I'm corrupting my kids!" Perhaps it was because I was too busy enjoying the movie myself. But you're right, it was NOT a "Disney" movie with complete wholesomeness. I think Dreamworks did a great job balancing kid/adult entertainment in this one.

A wonderful movie. We all loved it

As to the music, my daughter (age 20) and my two sons (ages 16 and 11) all swear that this is the third movie that used Smash Mouth's "All Star" as the "theme song". Wish I could remember what the other two were. I don't think of that song as being anything but generic contempoary rock. Why is it so popular?

You just have to be young to understand, I guess. I loved the song when it came out in summer '99. It's a great song of motivation, plus the funkiness, hip-hoppin' lyrics and 60's influence of Smash Mouth make it FUN!

When I went on a beach retreat weekend back in October, I brought along my guitar. It was the very first time I had ever played for anyone except myself. I was searching for something to play, and my friend Ryan was looking through my fat stack of lead sheets and said "Can you play 'Allstar'?" I said "Sure!"

So I started playing it, YES on my acoustic guitar and suddenly had 17 other voices joining in with me, singing along. It was an amazing experience for me...me first time actually singing with people.

To you it may seem like "generic contempoary rock," but to me, it was a folk experience. Folk in the real meaning of the word. Music of a people. Music bringing people together. People singing music together. OUR music. For this group of 18-23-year olds, it's the music that we have a connection to, just as you feel a connection to your particular music.

It's all good, and it's all in fun, so get in the pit and try and love someone!
