Very, very close to having this one figured out...Does anyone know if Tab, block chords, notation or any other help may exist to this piece? Is there(beyond dropped D)a tuning I may be missing? I'm having trouble with the 2nd section where the F comes in...it's a little hard to separate the two guitars, i.e. who's playing what. Thanks much in advance.

A net search for +"Music For A Found Harmonium"+tab will find you a handful, leave out the +tab and you'll find more.


On the Forum page, if you type harmonium in the Filter box and set the Age dropdown to All you'll find some previous threads on this tune, with some links to tabs there.

I don't know whose version you're listening to -- tune accompaniments vary, as you know -- but here's how I play it:

A part:

B part:
F   C   F   Dm

Bb   Bb?*   A   A7

*The ? chord is a Bb with the F (D string, 3rd fret) lowered one fret to E: fingering x 1 2 3 3 x

We use slightly different chords on the B part

F//E F//E
Bb//G Dim (Ist Position//to 2nd, up four frets)
A//A7 to out back to D

Incidently in West Va it has become a clogging piece, getting faster and faster, and is called "Pandemonium"

I use basically the same chords Michael does, but thought I'd throw in two cents' worth on voicings/fingerings. In the DGD sequence in the A part, I play a barre D chord fingered 557775 and an open G chord fingered XX000X. In other words, all I do to catch the G chord is lift my fingers and play the open D, G and B strings. It's much quicker than trying to catch a "real" G chord. (For the GAD sequence later in the A part I use a regular 355433 barre G.)

Listening to the Patrick Street version. Seems they've a diminished chord after the F/C section in part B. Resolves to an A, yes? The accompanying(?) guitar is in Dropped D tuning, that much is clear. Sorry, suddenly I'm able to focus in on the melody guitar and realized I was making it tons more difficult than it actually is. Thanks again for all your input, I'll post a finished version, maybe. It's comprised of mostly hammer-ons and pull-offs back and forth between the A-D-G strings. The rhythm guitar is f**king brilliant! I'm a pretty fair bluegrass/celtic guitar player, but this guy(whoever he/she is)makes me feel like an idiot. I'm determined to get that 'snap' effect he/she gets on the strum. Reminds me of trying to figure out Doc Watson's 'Black Mountain Rag' note for note years ago. The only thing is you can's slow the cd down like you could the vinyl!

I think you find it's the G dim with 001212 (similar to a D7) then slide up four frets, then to the barre A. Also for the first part, try a D chord, then hammer on a G note on the E string.

Finally, I'm not sure the Dropped D is a good tuning (tho it's your preference) because with the barre A at the end, you can lift the barre finger to accent the resolution back to the D chord.

And sometime try the F to E, F to E chord progression I suggested in the B part. Good Luck

Clinical Celt -- that guitarist would be Arty McGlynn, and he is a jawdropper! He and his wife, the brilliant fiddler Nollaig Casey, did a house concert here last year. Awesome does not begin to describe it.

As Claymore suggests, I hammer on to the 3rd fret G on the E string with my pinky, but I also simultaneously lift my index finger from the 2nd fret A on the G string.

Look in The Portland Collection. It's certainly written there (the only place I've seen it written) and probably has chords marked (I'm at work now so I can't check).
Many years ago I wrote it down from the original Penguin Cafe Orchestra recording, so somewhere at home I've also got the manuscript book with that in. And it's definitely got an augmented chord (two major thirds) in the second part.

You can't slow down a CD indeed CC but try ripping the track onto an MP3 on your computer - Then slow it down digitaly. It is even better than slowing the vinyl down because it stays in tune:-)

Ok, I was wrong, it's not augmented. I was singing it to myself in my head and I was sure it was an augmented chord. It isn't. I've gone back to my old notes from when I wrote it down off the record and it's actually a diminished 7th (three minor 3rds).
I haven't got The Portland Collection with me now, but when I have, and Mudcat's working, I'll post the chords from that.

Guitarist may be Jed Foley (another fine player) rather than Arty McGlynn depending on which Patrick Street album you're listening to!
