Here is an actor I enjoyed for a very long time. One of the first times I really noticed him was in a war movie where he played a nasty, creepy officer and I hated the man- Eddie Albert, not the officer! A bit later I realized that it was because he was a great actor.

I knew the man. He practised meditation for decades, and grew all his own produce in an organic garden for over fifty years. He was a real sweetheart, and a gentleman in the finest sense of the word.

Was an active participant in the battle of Tarawa (Nov. 1943), one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, and U.S. Marines Corps history. Is credited with braving enemy fire during 26 rescue missions saving wounded Marines. Was awarded the Bronze Star with a combat 'V' for rescuing 70 Marines during the battle of Tarawa in 1943
Has spoken about it in television documentaries.

Because of his his early work with environmental causes and groups, when International Earth Day was created, it was decided it must be held on April 22 because that is his birthday.

Yes, but if you can get your hands on "Brother Rat", it's a delightful movie, and I'm sure you'd enjoy it. It also stars that guy that used to be president. But he isn't nearly as wonderful as Mr. Albert.

Eddie Albert started out as a soda jerk, and then sang with a 1930s pop trio called Threesome.

He first gained notoriety on Broadway in Brother Rat and Room Service (without the Marx Brothers).

His Hollywood career started with the film adaption of Brother Rat with Ronald Reagan, and was interrupted by a stint in the Navy during WWII.

Albert was a genuine war hero. A thousand Americans and 4,800 Japanese lives were lost in bloody battle at Tarawa, a Pacific island, and Albert fought in the first wave of the three day combat. Afterward, he was ordered to salvage usable military equipment off the battlefield, and won his Purple Heart for finding and rescuing wounded men instead, who'd been abandoned under heavy fire.

Yes, he did sing, & more than the "Green Acres" theme song. He did as so many others on contract with the olden times studios, studying acting, dancing, singing. I never heard a bad word said about him, nor have I read such in any of the bios of the celebs. I always enjoyed his movies.

The A&E Channel has an excellent documentary on video/DVD called "Death Tide At Tarawa." Eddie Albert is one of the on-camera commentators, and talks about his experience. You can plainly see in his face that it all seems like yesterday to him. The show was released in 1993

Perhaps the last living human to have originated a major role in a musical by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, in THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE.

If you know that score, you'll have to think he maybe could sing a little, back in the day...

Another great actor from the Golden Age has gone. Never the lead - I don't think - but could steal the lead's thunder. The first two of his films to come to mind were "Attack" ( a terrific war movie ), and " Roman Holiday".
