Subject: Lyrics/Tune Reqd - The Day That Daddy Dr
From: eddie1
Date: 03 Nov 06 - 07:35 AM

Just before I left the US at the end of 98. I heard a song several times on radio. Basically it was about the guy's father farting in church! I'd love to track it down.
Can anyone help?
(Sorry I ran out of space in the Thread title.)

Eddie

My Google skills aren't good enough, apparently, to find this one, but I'm positive it's by Ray Stevens, the same guy who did "Mississippi Squirrel Revival." However, I don't think "dropped" is the right word for the title...but I can't think what it should be.
AAARRRRGGGGHHH. I hate it when my brain cells go south!

The song is called "The Big One" and is by Confederate Railroad. Here are the lyrics as I found them on the internet some time ago:

THE BIG ONE
© Confederate Railroad

It was a hot Sunday mornin', the middle of July.
The choir was a-singin' about the sweet by-and-by,
And ever'body was a-swayin', sweatin' in the heat.
We all bowed our heads down as the preacher took his seat.
My sister and my brother stood next to my mother
In the quiet at the close of the verse,
And that's when daddy cut the big one
At the Horn Lake Mississippi Missionary Baptist Church.

My sister rolled her eyes back. My brother bit his lip.
My cousin just behind us whispered, "Hey, who let it rip?"
I stuck my face in my shirtsleeve. I stared down at my shoes.
Lord, you could hear a pin drop as we stood there in the pew.
Heads were a-turnin'. Eyes were a-burnin'.
Momma stuck her nose in her purse
After daddy cut the big one
At the Horn Lake Mississippi Missionary Baptist Church.

He cut the big one. it was a stinker.
Then he broke the silence with a snicker.
And us kids started laughin' 'til I thought we was all gonna burst
After daddy cut the big one
At the Horn Lake Mississippi Missionary Baptist Church.

He said, "The devil made me do it."
Momma said it was the liverwurst.
That's why daddy cut the big one
At the Horn Lake Mississippi Missionary Baptist Church.

Is there a midi file or something with the tune on anywhere?

According to Allmusic.com, the song title is THE BIG ONE. It was written by Jon Ims and Pam Matthews, and it appears on two albums by Confederate Railroad:
"Keep on Rockin'," 1998; and "Rockin' Country Party Pack," 2000.

There are sound samples there, but I'm not sure if it's enough for you to learn the song.

Southern Celt--

I stand corrected. Thank you for the proper citation. Now that you've named them, I've remembered the Confederate Railroad album I heard it on--NOT Ray Stevens (although he probably would have liked it).

Just a couple more brain cells gone south, I'm afraid. Glad somebody's doing better!

Yes, I imagine ole Ray liked it. I knew about it only because my son had it on an album by Conf RR and insisted I listen to it. Later I queried the internet until I found the lyrics.   What's a bit funny about it is that I know several people in Horn Lake, MS and I bet they've always been mystified why Conf. RR chose their little town for such a coarse novelty song. Horn Lake is probably populated now by mostly middle class urban professionals who work in Memphis nearby and then escape the big city for home.

As for Ray Stevens, he has so many funny songs I can't name just one or two favorites. One of his I always thought would be a bit questionable to women was "It's Me Again Margaret" about a crazy stalker taken with a woman named Margaret, so taken that he calls her from the court house while he's being arraigned on charges. One of my internet friends, who lives in the Horn Lake area (nearby town) is named Margaret. I have to resist the temptation to start off my e-mails with "It's me again Margaret." I'm not sure if she'd get it and if she did, I'm not sure how she'd take it. :-|?

Perhaps the Ray Stevens confusion came about because he had one out called "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival" about a rogue squirrel disturbing a day at church...

"why Conf. RR chose their little town for such a coarse novelty song. Horn Lake"...

Well, getting a 'Horn' is an old sexual expression remembered from my childhood days - doubtless little kids still think it funny... :-)
