Subject: Epona above the BS line! Beginner fiddler
From: Epona
Date: 31 Dec 06 - 03:19 PM

Okay, I need some help. I'm trying to teach myself how to play the fiddle. I took a few lessons when I was living somewhere else, but since moving, I've had no luck finding an instructor. So, I've started trying to teach myself but I can't find any good books to really help me on my way. Does anyone have any ideas for me? I'd really appreciate it!!!!

I wish I knew something about fiddle. You might message Jeri. She is one dynamite player. And maybe she could point you in a direction and tell you who some other fidddle players are.

Thanks. Sadly, I can play bah bah black sheep and that's about it. And as soon as the fiddle comes out, the cats go into hiding! That says A LOT!

We've had some really good threads about that. In a quick thread title search using "fiddle" and the filter set to 90 days, THIS ONE came up. If I find some of the others I will post them for you.

There's also the BBC's Virtual Session complete with sheet music.

As near as I can tell Scoiltrad is no longer?

This looks like a useful one: MAd for Trad.

With a three year old grandson, I really like the sounds of their CD tutorials for kids:

Irish Music CD ROMs for Primary Schools

MadForTrad.com are pleased to offer an exciting set of CD ROMs for primary school children, which supports the Primary Music Curriculum (1999). High quality video clips show performances and interviews from some of Irish Music's finest exponents.

The text focuses on the Listening and responding strand and is divided into levels from infants to 6th class. It can be used individually by the child, or by the teacher as the basis for a whole-class activity. An extension of their use is in the home by parents and families.

Yeah, I think Scoiltrad is no longer online. It was a great idea while it lasted, personal help online from master teachers in fiddle, whistle, flute... too bad it is no more.

Where do you live Epona? Try contacting your local Comhaltas branch and they may have a fiddle tutor. http://www.comhaltas.com/

cheers

Epona - on Mudcat people often ask questions about learning to play a particular instrument. Often the answer needed depends on whay sttyle of music you wish to play on the instrument. The techniques used for American Old Time music are diferent from the ones usd in Irish or in Scottish, and often VERY different for folk styles compared with "orchestral" popular music.
It might help if you can tell what type of music you want to play.
Quack!
GtD.
