I noticed that our checking account balance was going down quickly, so I figured I had better find out where the money was going. Turns out that my wife was taking singing lessons at $125 per hour. She asked me to make the last payment, which was reduced to $100 because it was online instead of in person. This seems like an awful lot of money to me, since the most I ever learned in my life was $38 per hour, and that was only for a short time. What is a reasonable rate for singing lessons?

The average cost for singing and voice lessons is $60 per hour. Hiring a singing instructor to teach you to play the singing, you will likely spend between $50 and $100 on each lesson. The price of singing lessons can vary greatly by region (and even by zip code).

Mine were £20 supposedly for half an hour, usually ran longer. But that was earlier this century. Teacher alas no longer with us. Why did I go? ENT dept said pain in my neck probably due to singing (NB Not pain in neck of the audience). Teacher agreed and said she could cure, and did. With singing lessons. Best aspect (I thought) was her listening and criticism.

Seems a huge amount but the US may be non comparable to the UK. I think my wife’s lessons were £20 an hour

Seems a huge amount to me, too. But this is woo-woo woman singing, and all that stuff seems to cost twice enough as anything in the normal world. All the participants have names other than what they were born with, and the teachers have no surnames (until they collect the checks for their fee). There is one named Maniko that seems to be getting at least $2,000 a year from us.
I tried to carefully explain that I have just lost 1/3 of my retirement account, and we just can't be putting out that kind of money until the economy comes back.

What can I say? It's "healing" singing, so it somehow has more value than regular singing. But hell, this New Age stuff is getting as expensive as tithing to a fundamentalistic megachurch.

That would be called therapy sessions rather than singing lessons. Fees for healers can hardly be standardized; often the payment is the most effective part of the procedure; this is called the placebo effect.

As for lessons, my advice would be the following: for the first two years never hire a star singer, even if money is no object. Rather insist on someone who thoroughly understands the basics and can explain them to you. Such teachers do have their price, but nowhere near the amount in discussion here.

The same applies to teachers of instruments.

Not enough as far as I can see - they should be paying you much more
Singers are quite capable of teaching each others to sing if they work it out between a group of themselves without having to pay a stranger who almost certainly doesn't know as much about the songs you want to sing as you do
I've tried often enough to discuss relaxation, voice and singing exercises devised and developed by some of te UK's finest singers....
Your money, of course

Reminds me of a Jackie Mason story about someone paying a hooker $2000. "What does he get for $2,000 that he couldn't get for $1,000 ?" :)
The organisation where I teach a traditional music flute class pays its' tutors £48 for a 2 hour class.

I think teaching instruments is a diffenrent ball-game Kenny, though it's good to see Irish musicians I knew as youngsters now taking free classes for the love of preserving the music - not everybody can manage that of course
Our local flute player has racked up around 300 students down the years as well as raising family who play music superbly, one of them AMONG THE BEST
