Subject: Bob Zentz in San Diego! From: Sandy Paton Date: 30 Oct 06 - 12:38 PM I just received this notice and wanted to share it with Mudcatters in the San Diego area. Here is an altogether-too-rare opportunity to hear an excellent folk artist. Sandy THE SEA, THE SHIP & THE SAILOR featuring; Folk Legacy/Soundside recording artist Bob Zentz Celebrate this Veteran's Day weekend, with a rare musical visit from One of the "Other Coast's" finest folk/nautical performing artists. The evening will include traditional & contemporary Sea Songs, Recitations, Chanteys, Yarns, Forebitters and Nautical Poetry, set to music. The Maritime Museum of San Diego will host this special Concert at 7:30 PM on Friday, November 10, 2006. If You've never seen Bob perform, You've surely heard his songs (3 of them are in "Rise Up Singing"), tunes and poetry settings, sung & played, by a bevy of artists including Tom Lewis, Magpie, Utah Phillips, Gordon Bok, Pint & Dale and the UK's Sherringham Shanty Men. This Virginia song-finder, singer, sailor, educator & writer, draws on a repertoire of more than 2000 songs, presenting "thematic programs" in museums, libraries, concert halls, schools and festivals, from the shores of the Baltic, to Australia and New Zealand. Having spent a lifetime as a purveyor of Traditional Music, its roots and its branches, Bob embraces "the song that tells a story." As a ulti-instrumentalist, he plays dozens of the usual and unusual folk instruments, including; concertina, autoharp, jew's harp, melodeon, banjo and uke. His Concerts are a smorgasbord of songs, stories, tunes & recitations, sung and told with a sense of history, humanity and humor. Learn more about Bob at his web site: BOBZENTZ.COM. Bob briefly lived on the West Coast after being hired as a writer for the legendary Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late 1960s. His last visit to San Diego was in 1971, for two weeks active duty, with the US Coast Guard, Returning to his native Virginia, he revitalized the folk music scene in that area, founding the legendary Ramblin' Conrad's Folklore Center, a music shop/performance venue hosting the greats of folk and other traditional music genres for more than 20 years. He also established the Tidewater Friends of Folk Music, and a Public Radio Show called "In the Folk Tradition." Bob's first recording, on Folk Legacy, "Mirrors and Changes," was hailed by Johnny Cash as "one of the finest works I've heard by any artist." ...and has recently been released in CD format. Bob continues today as a versatile singer of songs, old and new, about people, places and times gone by. He is an acclaimed songwriter whose work has been covered by musicians, around the globe . And he is an eloquent commentator on the ecology of the human spirit, and a scholar of the evolution of "home-made" music. CONCERT TICKETS General admission tickets are $12 advance, $15 at the door, for MMSD and SDFH members -$10-and are available, online from www.westlinweavers.com/bobzentz.htm Concert Tickets This will be a very special evening for all those who love the music, tales and poetry of the SEA. Subject: RE: Bob Zentz in San Diego! From: Kaleea Date: 30 Oct 06 - 07:55 PM Sounds terrific! I've never been there. So Amos, is this going to be on the Star of India? Under the stars? Or is there another spot there where they have concerts? |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz in San Diego! From: kendall Date: 30 Oct 06 - 09:01 PM Bob is the only musiciam I have ever seen who could play the harmonica and the concertina at the same time. |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz in San Diego! From: Mick Tems Date: 30 Oct 06 - 09:22 PM Bob was the songwriter of Chariots and a big Star Wars fan. Pat and I played a great gig at Ramblin' Conrads, his guitar shop-cum-concert room, in Norfolk, VA, and then at the Star Wars convention, where we played for a fancy dress twmpath (a Welsh barn dance) - we even had The Thing dancing with The Blob, which is a memorable experience! We met up last in Finland, where Haken Streng and Alf Milari organised this mad Shanty week on board a bus, from Helsinki to Aland to all the Finnish towns and islands in between. Bob was his magnificent self again, and we promised to keep in touch - but my severe stroke intervened, and I was forced to stop gigging and remained virtually incomunicado ever since. It's good to know that Bob's playing San Diego. If you see him, just tell him that Mick from Calennig says Hello. Bob's a good mate. |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz in San Diego! From: bbc Date: 30 Oct 06 - 09:47 PM Then, on November 17th, he'll be at my local folk club in Hyde Park, NY! Looking forward to that! bbc |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz in San Diego! From: JennyO Date: 30 Oct 06 - 09:50 PM Yeah - we were lucky to have him in Oz a couple of years ago, as Sandra said. He's one of my favourites. Went mad and bought a few CDs - which I don't do lightly, as I don't have a lot of money to throw around. It would be nice to see him down here again - maybe at another National in Canberra? |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz in San Diego! From: Genie Date: 31 Oct 06 - 12:08 AM Sorry my sojourn in SD doesn't quite last long enough to get to see Bob's concert. More's the pity. Genie |
