Subject: Sea Shanties on the Today show today From: Anne Lister Date: 23 Jul 08 - 03:55 AM Did anyone else catch the feature about the stage show based on Johnny Depp's pirate project and sea shanties? As well as hearing some folkies performing sea shanties there was also the novelty value of hearing Bono, Lou Reed and Shane McGowan, as well as assorted others not normally associated with traditional music. Subject: RE: Sea Shanties on the Today show today From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 23 Jul 08 - 04:57 AM I think there are 3 shows, Dublin, Gateshead and London. Pity they couldn't have sorted one out for Whitby on board the 'Grand Turk' "Aharrrgh Jim lad!" Enough of that, I must set the tregallents! |
Subject: RE: Sea shanties on BBC radio 4 From: TheSnail Date: 23 Jul 08 - 05:07 AM Half asleep at the time but some reference to Keith Richards, Tom Waits and Johnny Depp. Are they taking folk club bookings? |
Subject: RE: Sea shanties on BBC radio 4 From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 23 Jul 08 - 06:11 AM I heard it and am just wondering wondering whether or not to commit suicide. But no! Even though Shane McGowan causes me real pain - it's just not worth it! |

Subject: RE: Sea shanties on BBC radio 4 From: The Borchester Echo Date: 23 Jul 08 - 06:31 AM The item was to advertise the Rogue's Gallery concerts at The Sage tomorrow, a follow up to the Pirates Of The Caribbean-inspired CD of a couple of years ago which, IIRC, filled many column inches on this forum. |
Subject: RE: Sea shanties on BBC radio 4 From: Mrs_Annie Date: 23 Jul 08 - 07:02 AM And at the Barbican next Monday (with assorted Watersons and Carthys) |
Subject: RE: Sea shanties on BBC radio 4 From: GUEST Date: 23 Jul 08 - 07:42 AM One extract played was a bit risqué for morning radio - it's a good job they didn't play any more of Baltimore Whores (or maybe it was a cleaned up version)!!! |
Subject: RE: Sea Shanties on the Today show today From: Penny S. Date: 23 Jul 08 - 09:43 AM I heard Whip Jamboree for the first time on Monday. And after this morning, I can't get it out of my head, either. Penny |

Subject: RE: Sea shanties on BBC radio 4 / Today Show From: GUEST,Diva Date: 25 Jul 08 - 06:52 AM I must confess my first thought was fuck off and leave our music alone.......I know. I know I'm getting more tolerant as I get older!!!!! However one of my pet theories is that all these rock star types really want to sing ballads and trad songs (its a lovely place where I live..in my noddle) I thought it was a joke.....and the best bit was Rachel Untahnks comment ..good on you hen. However I am willing to tutor Johnny Depp in the ways of trad song......... |
Subject: RE: Sea shanties on BBC radio 4 / Today Show From: Mrs.Duck Date: 12 Aug 08 - 12:17 PM I think Johnny Depp would benefit from a week in Whitby. as accomodation is at a premium he can share with me (Geoff you're in with the kids, OK ;0)) |
