Thought I would set up a thread to compare notes for people who get their internet access via cable TV. I get it via ntl (UK). The main problem I have is not being able to read long threads. The revised newlook Mudcat which arrived recently does not help me, as I can only read threads about 40 messages long. The new facility divides threads into pages 50 messages long,as I understand it, so it's no help to me.
    Anybody else have this problem? Would it bea simple thing to change the setting from 50 to 40? Any other problems anybody has?

I've used TV set top box (Bush - a UK system ) for nearly 2 years. It doesn't do any sound or load data files. It does access gif files, handles threads up to ~90 messages long (though VERY slowly).
There are few sites that it can't access eg Peter Gabriel, & I can't order from HMV on-line anymore (dunno why)

If I could afford a new computer - I would get one -but this'll (have to ) do for a while yet !

The automatic split will be of great help to me, though I haven't looked yet to see if old threads have been divided up.

It might be worth getting on to ntl, greg, and asking them if they can do anything to help. If they get the impression there are masses of people out there who might be tempted to try the old webTV, but are put off by these limitations...

I too get my web service from NTL ( through the set top box )but I've got broad band ( the highest speed on offer at the mo' ). We don't have any real problems and my beloved Parker loves it as he can download his piccies quicker!

Hit a 7 day refresh. They are split, including one with 355 messages that comes in 8 parts.

yes, but Greg seems to need a 40 message limit...I 'assume' that would be a minor thing to change in the code....50 is just a common round number. PM Pene Azul, greg.

I think I may be too full to access it, and I have no way of clearingit without going to someones elses computer.

Greg, here's a link to the page where you select who you want to send a message to. It's a lot shorter than the Personal Page. You still have to be logged on as a member to uses it.

I use Web TV as well, i seem to have similar pronlems to greg, re deleting old PM's, Penele Azul deleted the old lot for me recently, but has any web tv user found a way around this, got any advice etc?
I use a Pace DSL 4000 box, my ISP is Kingston Interactive Tellyvision.

thread drift= I know there at least 3 catters in hull that use internet tv, [me, dodgy bird, specky, dorrie, etc],
is there a good reason why we can't access music files, set to TV, audio works fine, i can also recieve wav files, is there any way we can get mp3 files via webtv, anyone tried this, know how to do it?
looks like sound is possible, but only certain types, anyone know any shortcuts/workarounds for mp3 midi etc?

Dunno about MIDI, etc., but it may be related to the fact that webtv can't do Java files, either. I suspect that the problems are inherent in the hardware -- that there's not enough memory (both RAM and otherwise) to handle the loads that Java, MIDIs, etc. place on the poor thing.

Wow--so people in the UK actually use that "Internet toaster" system? My sister-in-law works at Compaq (now H-P) Stateside, about five years ago she showed me a "white paper" that they would be the next big thing, make the net for everyone, not just computer-owners. They came out in North America and pretty much sank without a ripple in a year or two.

So I'm curious. I've never before heard of anyone who actually uses one of these.

Obviously there are some limitations--is it cheap enough to be worthwhile? Can you also get a broadband cable modem connection--the preferred way to use cable for internet in N.A.--and would it be more expensive?   

And does any Catter in North America use the Internet Toaster?

I'm probably just babbling, but the story I got was that web-tv was more popular "over there" because of the difference in 'phone billing. In most of the US, local calls are usually "free" in your monthly subscription, so you can hook up to a local 'phone number and surf all day. In some other places, you pay by the minute for all calls, so it can get very expensive to use a POTS connection - the plain vanilla of ISP connections - for surfing.

There are a few places here that charge by the minute for local calls, and a few other places where you can't get a local number for a decent ISP; but even in those places there are usually "premium" 'phone service plans that get you unlimited local calls, or a merger with another nearby local area, for relatively small cost.

Web-tv isn't really an option for me, because it would mean allowing "that tv thing" (cable) in the house... I don't think it offers much to most US web users that can't be found in other kinds of connections, at lower cost and with even better performance. It could be quite handy if the other options aren't there.
