Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Tim Maguire From: breezy Date: 12 Mar 03 - 04:41 PM do you do the hermit and the molecatcher then S B's p |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Tim Maguire From: GUEST,Steve benbows protege Date: 13 Mar 03 - 03:14 AM I sing the molecatcher, never heard of the hermit. Steve's repertoire is so bloody vast that I can't even start to get to grips with most of it. Also, Steve indulges my passion for jazz. As you remember, he worked closely with Denny( R.I.P) for so long and having Disley, Ike Isaacs, Ivor moraints as close mates Steve has an amazing approach to jazz that is an amalgamation of all their styles plus his own. But I have definately become a better all round perfomer because of him. Breezy is it you that runs a club just outside london? if it is you could book Benbow senior and junior for a reasonable fee. We do trad folk, Latin, jazz, Gypsy jazz and he is available. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Tim Maguire From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 Mar 03 - 04:47 AM Yes Breezy - why not book Steve - I know that he's not too fond of having to travel too far, but it's not a hard drive from Hanwell to St Albans. Protege - is Steve still driving his cab ? - If he is, he'd probably turn the meter on and give Breezy the bill ! BTW "Denny RIP" mentioned above was Denny Wright - a great jazzman and also guitarist for Lonnie Donegan. There used to run some great sessions at "The Fox" at Hanwell before Denny's sad death. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Tim Maguire From: breezy Date: 13 Mar 03 - 06:45 AM Perhaps they - or at least the Protege if the old man aint up to it, how old is he ? - ought to come to Friday 28th March for the Marilyn Middleton evening and then I can judge for myself. If he dont know the Hermit I'ld be worried cos it was Steve's constant standby. Even when he was at Croydon in the 7o s plugging Saffron ? Some of our members come from further than Hanwell Andy Irvine on 11th April Coope B & S in May 23rd We only book the best. See Folk London Jan - Feb 03 for the full page ad. Only M Jones books bigger at the soleil This Friday its Charity night for M.S. at the Comfort Hotel St Albans Holywell Hill doors open 7.38 |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Tim Maguire From: GUEST,steve benbows porotege Date: 13 Mar 03 - 08:17 AM Breezy, the age old problem has reared it's ugly head again. The version of the guy you remember and the Benbow that is current are now two very different people. Steve's staple songs are "Ghost riders" and "Goodnight to your web footed friends" which he always finishes his sets off with. After nearly fifty years in the business Steve's musical tastes are very eclectic. That is what you get for being the guitar player for the B.B.C, session guy etc. As for "You only book the best" He still knock spots off of any modern singer/Instrumentalist that has reared their heads in the last twenty years. That is why Martin Carthy gave him a good write up in his book, as did George Melly... should i continue? as for you only book the best did you buy a copy of his c.d? That should give you a vague idea of what he is about these days. Dave - steve is not driving the cab "professionally" due to ill health. The oldman is seventy, the protege is twenty two. Steve gigs on a friday evening but if the 'Conditions' were right we both would come over. I would love to come but I myself don't drive. with regards. pete. |
Subject: Lyr Add: TIM McGUIRE (Leon Rosselson) From: GUEST,Sparky Date: 05 Dec 03 - 03:37 PM I see back in March you were looking for Tim McGuire? This is not from a hard copy, purely from memory, but it comes with a garantee of being 99.5% correct! Hope it's of help, if not too late FIRE! FIRE! Fire down below! Go fetch a bucket of water, girls. There's fire down below. Well... Little Tim McGuire loved to play with fire, Always hated water, never used to wash, Loved the smell of burning, the bonfires burning, Loved to play all day with his little tinder box. When McGuire was four, they dressesd him in a uniform, Sent him to school with iron railings all around. He saw the school and the rules and the railings, Took his little tinder box and burnt the schoolhouse down. When McGuire grew older, they made him wear a bowler, Sent him to work in an office in the town. He took all the pens, and then took all the papers, Took out his little tinder box and burnt the office down. Oh, how he laughed and danced in the firelight, Stretching for the sun, and lighting up the sky! "When I'm a man, I'm goint to be a fireman, I'll keep the bonfires burning untill the day I die." Now the judge said at his trial, "Your behaviour has been vile. You're a menace to society, though you may think you're big. You'll have to go to prison," and then what a commotion, As smoke and flames went pouring from the judge's wig! Oh, how he laughed and danced in the courtroom! They took him down and locked him in a prison cell. He never saw the sun or heard the songbirds calling. He saw the prison bars and heard the prison bell. Then early one morning, just as the day was dawning, A great reel of fire spun skyward from the jail. The iron bars melted; the stone walls crumbled. No one in the prison lived to tell the tale. No one ever found Tim McGuire's little tinder box. No one ever found a trace of Tim McGuire. Perhaps he's up in heaven setting fire to angels' halos. Perhaps he's down in hell dancing round the fire. FIRE! FIRE! Fire down below! Yes, fetch a bucket of water, girls. There's fire down below! |
Subject: RE: RE: Spanielears (little Tim Maguire) From: Leadfingers Date: 05 Dec 03 - 05:35 PM One of Leon Rosselsson's early songs that I used to sing back then when the earth was young. Verse three I have 'Hated the pins and the pens and the papers' , otherwise near as damn it the same. It is always polite to credit authorship as well as source for songs one is performing (If Known). |
Subject: RE: RE: Spanielears (little Tim Maguire) From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 05 Dec 03 - 06:01 PM Already posted here a couple of years ago: TIM MACGUIRE "Spanieleyes"' question was answered immediately he or she asked it last March (within three minutes, in fact), but "Sparky" may not have realised that the coloured letters saying "click" were a link to the song, perhaps. It was a kind thought, anyway, but for future reference it's usually more helpful to answer a question in the thread in which it was asked; in this case Lyr Req: Little Tim Maguire |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Johnny Dirt (parody of Tim McGuire) From: GUEST Date: 14 Jun 22 - 06:55 AM Little Tim MacGuire loved to play with fire, Hated the water, never used to wash, Loved the smell of burning, of bonfires burning, Loved the flash of lightning and the burning sun, When I'm a man I'll become a fireman, Then I can light a fire for everyone, When he was four they dressed him in a uniform, Sent him to school with iron railings all around, Hated the school and the rules and the railings, Took his little tinder box and burnt it to the ground, Oh how he laughed and danced in the firelight, Oh how he laughed as the flames leapt to the sky, When I'm a man I'll going to be a fireman, Keep a bonfire burning until the day I die, When he was older they made him wear a bowler, Sent him to work in an office in the town Hated the pens the pins and the papers Had only one ambition, to burn the office down Oh how he laughed and danced in the firelight Oh how he laughed as the flames leapt to the sky when I'm a man I'm going to be a fireman And keep a bonfire burning until the day I die The judge said at his trial, your behavior has been vile You're a menace to society although you think you're big You have to go to prison - and then, what a commotion For smoke and fire were pouring from under the judge's wig Oh how he laughed and danced in the courtroom Oh how he laughed as the flames roared high, They took him away, and locked him in his cell He never saw the sun or heard the songbirds calling Saw the prison bars and heard the prison bell Then early one morning just as the day was dawning A great wheel of fire leapt skywards from the jail The iron bars melted, the stone walls crumbled No one in the prison lived to tell the tale No one ever found Tim MacGuire's little tinder box No one ever found a trace of Tim MacGuire Perhaps he's up in heaven setting light to angels' haloes Or he’s down below dancing round the fires |
