Subject: Charley Noble Songs Website From: Charley Noble Date: 08 Jun 03 - 07:27 PM Well, here's a product of creative songwriting, creative advice from Mudcatters, and the technical assistance of my wife - a personal website of my favorite songs with lyrics and some MP3 samples. Some of the songs are wholly orignal, some I've adapted, and some I sing the way I learned them. My advice is to use Internet Explorer rather than Netscape for more direct access to lyrics and the tunes, although I suppose it also depends on what version of Internet Explorer you are using and how you have it configured. For a good time click here: Charley Noble Songs Website Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: GUEST,Jon Date: 08 Jun 03 - 08:13 PM Sorry Charley, I do think you've tried hard and like the look of the site. Maybe I was a little harsh on someone who's made a good effort but, I'd seriously suggest convering your .doc files to html files and presenting them that way. Jon |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: Charley Noble Date: 08 Jun 03 - 09:53 PM If I convert my Word files to html files, my chord positioning goes all awry. It's all a trade-off. NetScape apparently doesn't handle my MP3 sample files as well as Internet Explorer either. Not to worry. We're not trying to place this website in orbit. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: GUEST,Jon Date: 08 Jun 03 - 10:13 PM Youl'd probably be best off using a fixed font in Word anyway for chord alignment, I'm not sure you can guarantee every one would see your alignment. Any way, not sure how <pre> works here (this looks fine on preview without auto line breaks) but this with luck is roughly what I see with your word doc but aligned for a fixed font in html.

Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Jun 03 - 08:03 AM Thanks for the suggestion, Jon. We'll consider it. My initial goal was to post my Word song files so most people could access them directly (without having them saved to the desktop), have the song on one page which sometimes involved having two column formatting, and avoiding the job of transforming the original Word files into a highly formatted and thus more memory intensive HTML files. It's a trade-off whichever way we go. We are also using a relatively modest "personal website" which comes with our internet account, limited to 10 MB. We're using about half that now but I plan to provide more MP3 sample files for the other songs now that we have this site rolling. I may not be totally consistent in my use of font. Most of the files are in Times/12 but several others are in Times New Roman/12. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Jun 03 - 09:49 AM Well Charley, I don't give a rat's ass HOW you did it, I love THAT you did it, and the first song I looked at and clicked was WONDERFUL! Thank you for putting enough of the MP3 up that I could learn the song, and print it and play it! I look forward to more time with your favorites. It's fine just as it is-- GOOD ON YA! ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: GUEST,Jon Date: 09 Jun 03 - 12:18 PM Charley, I would suspect the problem you have with HTML is the Word conversions. I just tried one of yours just editing it in notepad as a text file, I could get something looking similar at about 1/4 of the size of your .doc. An MS Word HTML conversion a file nearly double your .doc. Trouble is that to do it by hand takes time... "Everyone", Radriano is precicesly the point. Not everyone with browers can access .doc files. I had a few months here when I was running Linux here and wouldn't have been able to view Charleys songs. I just don't like the attitude (not from Charley, he's been very reasonable with me) that one should be forced to use a proprietray MS thing when reasonable plain text alternatives exist. Anyway, best of luck with the site Charley. Wish i'd never started this... |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Jun 03 - 12:38 PM What I'd really like to see, as well as encourage, are a few more Mudcat member personal websites. Being musically illiterate myself, I find it extremely helpful to see chord structure and to hear a MP3 sample file. Now if I'd wanted bells and whistles too, I would have had my nephew design the site. He gets paid big bucks to do such things. Of course my wife is no novice, having designed the legislative website for the House of Representatives for the State of Maine, and I've had a hard time reining her in. She still wants to have "Charley Noble" pop up on the home screen playing the concertina while dancing a hornpike! Now I have to find all my old song threads and link them to the Website. Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: GUEST Date: 09 Jun 03 - 12:46 PM On the more positive side, apart from me saying I like the layout of the site. I've enyoyed reading the biography and enjoyed listening to a couple of the MP3s (they take me ages here - just a pathetic connection speed here). Interesting working of "Dead Dog Cider/Scrumpy"... |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Jun 03 - 01:14 PM Guest- One of the reasons I'm only providing MP3 samples of each song is because I still only have a dial-up internet connection and it takes ten minutes or so to transmit or receive a 2 MB MP3 file. I thought there might be a few Mudcatters out there that had "pathetic" internet connections as well. Oh, and see if you can find the original tune for "Dead Dog Scrumpy" in the DT; it's not a bad one but I needed something else for my new chorus, and damn it, that song deserves a chorus. Subject: RE: Charley Noble Songs Website From: radriano Date: 09 Jun 03 - 02:14 PM Jon does make a good point about these MS programs. MS systems happen to be loaded on my computer here at work so it hasn't been a problem for me although I am barred from accessing MP3 files. Radriano |
