Don't know if I mentioned, you can now hear Mrs Pavane (Dawne Oakley) in CD quality at www.motagator.co.uk

We are going into the studio later this month to make another CD and I hope to get her to record a couple more folk songs then. (Maybe Ar Lan y Mor and Lowlands of Holland) The CD is not intended for a folk audience, so we can only sneak the odd one in.

Pavane:

Sorry -- I tried both the songs on Dawne's site and couldn't get either of them to play -- they both went into "Buffering" state and wouldn't come out of it.

But she _looks_ like a beautiful singer! :>)

That's odd - other people have been able to play it. Have you reported it to the site? Can you play other tracks from it?
Maybe a software problem?

There is one song on my own web site www.greenhedges.com, but recorded on a cassette, not CD quality.

Beautiful voice... and an interesting arrangement of the backup instruments on "Summertime"

Wow, what a voice -- I tried it on my Mac when I got home and it worked perfectly.

I get the distinct impression she would do well unleashing her power on more powerful stuff, like "Strange Fruit", some impassioned torch or blues, even some select Janis Joplin material. She has a wonderful strength in her voice which shouldn't be wasted on the more whitebread material. This is just my instinctive suspicion, and I could be off the mark hearing so little from so far, so please excuse me if so.

I get a "Class not registered" Error when trying to play music from this site. Perhaps it uses a Codec not on my machine - but there is no way to find out from the site what it is... or where to get it...

Yes, nice voice. I especially liked Danny Boy. Just my opinion I suppose, but something about the accompaniment on Summertime isn't as complimentary to her wonderful voice as it should have been. I'd love to hear her sing that song to just an upright bass and a single bari sax.

If I lived anywhere near South Wales I'd be combing the clubs to see where she was singing.

She does do many other songs, but these were the only two she has recorded that fall into the genres appropriate for that site.

She sings, but has not yet recorded, songs like
House of the Rising sun
Power of love
Black Velvet
First Cut is the Deepest
Take it to the limit
Blanket on the ground

The Summertime accompaniment is actually a professional MIDI backing track. As we don't have a band, we are restricted to the songs for which we can get suitable tracks. I wouldn't even consider making my own!

The CD (just a CD_R) from which the songs were taken includes
That Ole devil called love
Don't it make my brown eyes blue
& a couple of Dusty Springfield songs.

The choice of material is also dictated by the type of venues available. When she is doing the nursing homes, they get Que Sera and Bless em All!

The streaming music files are in a format with the extension "filename.m3u" I don't know what that signifies as a format. The low bitrate download is in "file.mp3" so you should be able to listen to that.
Quack!

Thanks to your interest, she is now no.1 AND no.2 in the weekly chart at motagator.

Keep up the good work!

Having now lookup up the words to Strange Fruit, I don't think it is one she would want to sing, at least at present. But thanks for the thought, and we are still open to suggestions, particularly for blues.

Neil, I'll bet a Mudcatter would consider building nice MIDI backing tracks for Dawn. Why don't you ask around? Mudcatters could build you killer backing that would be far more fitting to Dawn's performance and she'd have the advantage of having totally original tracks on her CDs.

Yes, she does a number of songs unaccompanied. I am hoping to upload Sovay Sovay, Lowlands of Holland, and Sorry the Day I was married soon. And Yes again, if any mudcatter could create backing tracks of suitable quality, we would be VERY interested.

By convention, channel 4 (or 16) is used for a vocal track, which can be muted. Each instrument also has its own channel.

We do use professional backing tracks for copyright material, because there is no question then over the public performance rights, but for public domain work, there is no problem (Yes, the inspectors are out, here in the UK, and looking for people using Karaoke tracks, which are NOT licenced in the same way. Anything with a fade-out is suspect)

Glad you like them, anyway. Maybe we can contribute to the next Mudcat CD, perhaps a traditional Welsh song.
