Subject: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: Bassic Date: 11 Oct 04 - 01:21 PM Now I have broadband and sound on my PC I want to share tracks from CD`s with my friends via the internet. How do I do it please? I have tried selecting a track and sending it as a file via msn and via email as an extension but it just seems to send an empty file and not "read" the information from the CD drive in my pc. What am I doing wrong? I know there must be a simple answer to this, and several very complicated ones as well I would imagine! Have tried a search on Mudcat but guess I am asking the wrong question. :-( |

Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: Clinton Hammond Date: 11 Oct 04 - 01:26 PM Start at MP3.com... Learn how to 'rip' cds to MP3s... then find a good FTP program, and learn how to use that... then teach your friends how to do it... and us IT to share your files... Alternatively, once you've learned how to rip MP3s, get a gmail account (1 gig of space for free) and invite your friends to get accounts as well.. use those accounts to email MP3s back and forth... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: GUEST,Sharin' Date: 20 Jul 07 - 02:39 AM I know how to compress recorded files (spoken recordings), but I've never compressed a CD track. I'd like to do that now and upload a couple of songs so people can hear them. Not my music (copyright protected stuff by others), but I'm not seeking to make a profit off of it. So it that legal? I've never followed the U.S. legislation on file sharing, but it's mentioned in the news every once in a while. Any advice? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: Peace Date: 20 Jul 07 - 04:50 AM If it is copyright protected stuff by others, then you have no business or right to be sharing their work with anyone unless you have their permission in writing. Maybe you aren't seeking to make a profit, but your largess with their work could result in a loss of income to them, and that is why you'll get nailed to the barn door if you are caught. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: MMario Date: 20 Jul 07 - 07:27 AM Ditto what Peace said: Ripping a track from a copyright CD and "sharing" it via the internet is essentially the same stealing a copy of the track. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: Bill D Date: 20 Jul 07 - 10:14 AM As you can see, it's complicated. This issue has been around ever since people made tapes of LPs. Sometimes it actually helps an artist, sometimes it is a way to cheat him. Ultimately, you must decide whether this 'technically' breaking of the law is serious or not....like jaywalking or eating a grape at Safeway. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: MMario Date: 20 Jul 07 - 10:16 AM BTW - copyright violation has NOTHING to do with whether or not you make a profit, charge, etc. That is probably the most mis-understood aspect of copyright. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: M.Ted Date: 21 Jul 07 - 12:51 AM The copyright on recordings in the UK is fifty years, meaning that recordings from before 1957 are in the public domain and, presumably could be shared on the internet. Without being called a thief. But this is only true across the pond--here in the US, you would still be a horrible criminal--and, one supposes, would deserve all the financial devastation that the Saints-among-us who run the music industry can impose. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: Bill D Date: 21 Jul 07 - 09:48 AM ...and Hell will be infinite downloading of nothing but Milli Vanilli and selected outtakes from the Topeka, Kans. Rap festival. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: M.Ted Date: 21 Jul 07 - 03:22 PM And all the CDs we buy will be blank, but we'll have to pay copyright royalties anyway-- |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: Bill D Date: 21 Jul 07 - 04:51 PM so...we'd best get on with the sinning, so we don't feel like the punishments were unjust! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Music File sharing for Dummies! Help!! From: M.Ted Date: 21 Jul 07 - 05:04 PM A good and honest point, Bill. Gimme a pigsfoot and a bottle of beer-- |
