I am off back to Edinburgh on April 3rd for three nights.
Two questions;
Anything happening gig-wise on the Thurs, Fri or Sat nights?

Is there a good record shop, where I can find folkie CDs?

Don't know about gigs but Coda music shop on the Mound is a folk specialist. Extend your overdraft if you go in!!

From my posting of a few weeks back:-

"Subject: RE: What is on in Edinburgh on sunday?
From: Jack Campin
Date: 29 Jan 08 - 06:17 AM

Sandy Bells Scottish session 4-8 (the one I go to)
Sandy Bells Irish session 8-12
Royal Oak singing session 4-8 (?)
Wee Folk Club at the Royal Oak 8-11

Pick up a copy of the Gig Guide at Bells and that'll tell you what else is on."

Great session 9-11 45 on Fridays in the The Tass on the Royal Mile, down from Netherbow Theatre, if you like songs and music.

Just found this neat website. Its main catchment area is rather far away from where you'll be (Aberfeldy is northwest of Dundee) but there are a bunch of useful links, including folks clubs for Edinburgh & Glasgow, then a sub-page with "more" which I haven't explored. Worth a look, anyway -

Irene,
Newtongrange (Nitten) has a club night on Thursday in The Dean Tavern - south of Edinburgh bypass beyond Bonnyrigg/Lasswade direction....

PM me and I'll try to get you in touch with my sister or other club member.
Mudcatter Tattie bogle is a regular there.
Regards, Hazel.

Try the Royal Oak in Infirmary St.(just off the Bridges) It's brilliant there every night. They also have a website you can checkout who will be there.

Thank you all so much.
I'll check out The Mound.
I'll have to see how much stamina I have left at the end of the day, and also how much granny-sitting (not my granny, I hasten to add. She would be 122 this year!)I manage to skive off.

Irene

Thursday night there's a loud mostly-instrumental mostly-Scottish session at the Antiquary, St Stephens St, Stockbridge.

First Thursday of the month is guest night at Nitten - I don't know who, look at the contact stuff for Midlothian on my website. I live there but am more likely to be at the Antiquary.

I can second the recommendation for Coda Records, they really are good.

PM me if you want to meet up.

"Anything happening"?? Absolutely LOADS!! Apart from the sessions mentioned above, you're right in the middle of "Ceilidh Culture", a 3-week-long music festival with oodles of gigs.
Newtongrange guest night on the Thursday is Gina Rae and Sandy Wright. Starts at 8pm in the Dean Tavern.
I am personally involved with the Edinburgh and Lothians TMSA events "Northern Streams", from 4th-6th April, based on Fri/Sat at the Scottish Story-Telling Centre on the Royal Mile, and on the Sunday, at the Royal Oak pub: this celebrates the links between scottish and Scandinavian music: we have concerts on Fri-Sat nights, and workshops on Sat/Sun on Danish Tunes, Norwegian and Orcadian song and Norwegian and Danish dance.

And a session outside Edinburgh, in Linlithgow on the first Thursday of the month - the pub in the High Street across the road from the Four Marys, I forget its name. 8pm-11pm. Fits with the last train back to Edinburgh (it takes 20 minutes). This will only be the third. Mostly instrumental as far as I know.

The Nitten FC gig is also handy for public transport, about 35 minutes to the city centre, last buses pretty late.

Linlithgow Session is at "The Auld Hole in the Wall" on 3rd April: actually started last October, so that would make this next one the 7th so far.

Jack,
I PM'd you last night, and now have no idea if you have replied. I am not being rude. The computer seems to have thrown its dummy out of the pram! Try Irene dot marshall 1 at tiscali dot co dot uk, if I haven't got this sorted in a day or two.

Most of the sessions will still be on: some of the clubs take summer breaks, but Newtongrange will still be on every Thursday evening.
There's also the mighty Runrig on at Edinburgh Castle on the Saturday evening if it's not already sold out (£35 a ticket plus booking fee) - or further west it's Lomond Festival at Balloch (southern end of loch Lomond) that weekend.
