Spirituals collected by the Society for the Preservation of Sprirtuals. Section on spirituals in the book arranged by Katharine C. Hutton et al. Two selections recorded on discs; no longer available. Augustine T. Smythe et al., 1931, The Carolina Low-Country, The Macmillan Company, NY. Nerd (16 Dec 08) posted the text in thread 65010, but without heading, and the spiritual did not enter the Permathread. Origins, Kumbaya . The spiritual probably is the origin of the song Kumbaya. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Kumbaya From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Feb 12 - 01:44 PM I posted the spiritual "Come By Yuh" in a separate thread, to emphasize its distinctness and put it in a form that could be recorded in the Spirituals Permathread. There is no certainty that Frey's gospel song is derived from this Carolina low-country spiritual, other than similarity in pronunciation of the title. (see cross-referenced threads.) Same intent as the old spiritual, "Jesus, won't you come b'm-by? [by and by], with Jesus substituted for Lord. Also see 1st verse of "Jesus won't you come by here" in Rise Up Singing p. 94 (other verses there are floaters). A better version of this old white(?) gospel song on youtube- "Jesus won't you come by here" youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5gk3wowcVw John Fahey plays it well on his guitar as an instrumental, also youtube- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDbs8qRESVs Sheet music for a version here, "words and music Traditional Christian." http://pwdonline.info/documents/JesusWontYou Comeby.pdf "Lord, Won't You Come By Here" in the Ruby Pickens Tartt Collection in Solomon and Solomon, Honey in the Rock," p. 27. This is much closer to the Carolina low-country spiritual, it's occurrence in Alabama suggests that it was fairly widespread. Madelyn Sheppard published it, Eight Selected Spirituals, 1926. See Bluegrass Messengers, http:/bluegrassmessengers.com/621-o-lord-wont-you-come-by-here.aspx. John A. Lomax collected it in Texas (John A. Lomax, Texas Recordings, 1941). Also in Lib. Congress, unidentified singer in Alabama, 1941, coll. Sonkin. "O Lord, Won't You Come By Here," Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore, vol. 3, p. 658,, 3 verses, Negro, coll. Boyd, 1927, "Somebody's sick; Lord, Come By Here, etc." "Come By Here, Good Lord", old gospel, instrumental on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqW3xogskk Also, at funeral, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kK_xZ7w548 Billy Bishop, etc. I have tried to find an origin for this, but it seems to be 'anon.' and nothing certain before 1920s. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Come By Yuh (Spiritual) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 05 Feb 12 - 02:50 PM Lyr. Add: LORD, WON'T YOU COME BY HERE 1 Oh, Lord, won't you come by here Lord, won't you come by here Oh. Lord, won't you come by here Lord, won't you come by here Oh Lord, won't you come by here Lord, won't you come by here. 2 Now Lord, hit's er needy time Now Lord, hit's a needy time Oh, Lord, hit's a needy time Now, Lord, hit's a needy time (3x) 3 Lord, I'm er motherless child (2x) Oh, Lord, I'm er motherless child Lord, I'm er motherless child (3x) 4 Lord, won't you hear me cry (2x) Oh, Lord, won't you hear me cry Lord, won't you hear me cry (3x) 5 Lord, I'm goin' down in your name (2x) Oh, Lord, I'm goin' down in your name Lord, I'm goin' down in your name. "Come by here" is a Southern idiom for transportation and visiting, some intrusion into the pattern of daily routine, as in "The train doesn't come by here." ------ "Oral-musical qualities of the pulpit cadence dominate this artistically superior and moving prayer of the desolate." Notes with the hymn. No. 27. 1984, O. and J. Solomon, Honey in the Rock, Ruby Pickens Tartt Collection of Religious Folk Songs from Sumpter County, Alabama, Mercer University Press. Tartt MSS., Alabama Archives, collection completed by 1937. Outside of the pulpit, the first and second verses continue in the gospel song, "Needed Time" (variously titled). |

Georgia Peach was a great gospel singer; unfortunately few know her material and most of it is no longer available. O Lord, can't you hear me pray (repetitions) My Lord, " O Lordy, " O Lord, won't you come by here (repetitions) My Lord, " O Lordy, " |
