Well... For the fans of Sorcha Dorcha, and the New York Folkies who can't afford to record... with the clock running... you're old mudcat pal Larry is happy to announce the start of a traditional music recording co-op. Starting small, 3 great mics, a Tascam DA78 HR, a Mackie consol, effects by Lexicon, we are setting out to give a voice to lesser and unkown folkies with time not being a major factor - clock watching getting in the way of creativity. The proposal is that for cost and a peice of the profits, we can make excellent folk music in NYC.
This also means that Sorcha Dorcha's recordings will finally be excellent quality - as good as the musicianship, (the plug o matic at work!)and we will have the time to make our recordings glitch free!
Those interested in the project, feel free to contact me, through this post, or my Mudcat mail, or at InOBU@aol.com.
Cheers all...
Larry

Now you all have a reason to come to NYC. I always have a spare bed so lodging is free.

Thanks for the endorcements. I have been working on a mission statement, and it is short enough to put on our letter head.

"The day the civil rights movement in America died - was the day we stopped singing" (Arthur Ninoy * to Larry Otway over burbon in a bus depo bar.) The mission of the Hearthside Music Cooperative is to sing as though our lives depend on it.

*Arthur is a great elder statesman of people's lawyering, the last lawyer for the Rosenburgs among many other great cases.
Cheers
Larry

Great idea. Only downside to it is, it's a long way from Harlow to New York. (And this is one of the very few things that could possibly make me wish it otherwise.)

The problem I have, Kevin, is that Larry here is on the wrong coast....

And that's precisely what makes me happy to hear about this, Larry -- I'm only a commuter train ride away from one heck of a good idea! Margaret

Well Kev,
Everyone should see New York once! (I am not sure if that is only once and then you know... or at least once and then you see it isn't what you expected... I have to think about that one - good phrase though... One day we have to have you around to record those great songs of yours! Hmmmm.)
Margret V - let's have a listen! Send an informal tape to....
Hearthside Music Cooperative
Atten: L. Otway
80 Saint Marks Place
NYC, NY 10003.
We are going to be up and running VERY soon. The equiptment is in, I am meeting tommorow with a sound engineer, to learn more about multi-track recording, the sound proofing is progressing... next stop, in the hum.
Cheers all,
Larry
Amergin... the other way to look at it is that we are halfway between you and Kev! So, if you colaberate, this is the obvious studio to do it in!

How is it going? I liked the free CD, and was just wondering when you were going to bring out one I could buy?

Roger: Yer a saint! I'm sitting here, with a gert big headache over trying to haul my band into the studio, even though it is available to them 24 hours a day. New York is no place for human's to live, and as a result, people who come here, for the pace of life and such, well, they are a collection of sick puppies. In three months, we have produced, let me see... well... ahm.... counting.... 0 minutes of finished recording. If it were not for the generally poor work habits of all the other musicians that have circled this little oasis, well, I am stuck with what I have. For 10 cents I'd leave New York, as everyone else with sence has, but for my wife's addiction to living here, not that her carreer is really going anywhere either. My band keeps promicing to get it together to record, and like Charlie Brown kicking the football, I go for it. However, to their credit, when you look at the reaction of the Pinewoods crowd to new bands looking for a couple of bucks to show for their work, well, no wonder any folk musician with a brian gets the eff'n hell out of this town.
Sorry, I really did mean to say a few positive things, but, I lost a really dear friend (see the Lakoto Storyteller post) and I am in a foul effin mood.
One day I expect to have a recording done, but at this point it will be long after Amadou Diallo has been forgotten, and the dams have been built in canada, and all the other things I am sining about are dust. Damn, here I go again,
On a positive note, some interesting bands want to record with us, and on a less possitive note, half of them, the first quesiton is , after we record in your studio, can we sell out to like, Columbia records, for distribution... translation, can we record with you for free, because we can't get the big guys to listen to us, and after you take a risk on us, can we screw you and leave you in the slum we crawled out of... I'm sorry Roger, it is not a good day for me to try and be positive. I'll let you know if a CD ever gets done.
Thanks again Larry

Larry buck up! You are a talented man with dear friends. You have been an inspiration to many of us at Mudcat (myself included).

I am so sorry to hear about your friend; I lost someone in January and am still sad but the worst of it was right after he died so I know you must be feeling lousy just now...

I finally got some copies of my demo CD made (my version of iTunes bit the dust and I was just able to get a new one TODAY from a friend) and a copy is now wending its way to you.

If you ever wanna come check out Boston ( a good traditional music scene here!) you can stay with me anytime.

Peg

Looking forward to the demo, Peg! I'd love to check out Boston, however, I believe there are still wanted posters up in Dorchester for me. I had a big fight over an attempt by the Boston currach rowing club to segrigate the sport of currach racing in the states. I introduced currach racing to the states in 1981. Boston and Anapolis objected to black members of our rowing crew, Boston violently objected... made the cover of all the papers in Boston. Mayor Flynn was a great help, actually knew me as a musician! He used to come to hear me play in New York with his aids, in mufti. Well, only kinda kidding. The fact is I can't get Genie to move, and can't communte 6 hours to play. I'll let you know if I am going up to Boston again soon. I used to go up for events at Harvard Law school every once and a while... cheers. Larry

wow, Larry you really had me going there for a minute! :) What an incredible story, I am trying to sort out which details are true (you are a humble guy so I am guessing most of 'em). Boston IS a racist city unfortunately, one of its worst flaws.

It's only about an hour by plane to NYC; and pretty inexpensive.

Actually the rowing story is true, it is why I left boat building to go to law school. The events happened the same week as the USN Sark was hit by the missle, Cheers Larry,
PS I have trouble getting a buck fifty for the subway theses days!
