Following on from the success of treaties at this year's Saltburn festival, where she won the Shanty singing competition, we now have a second UK Mudcatter getting well-deserved recognition.

At Bromyard Folk Festival last weekend, Alanww won the Bromyard Shantyman competition, which he didn't even know he'd entered! Very nice comments made by Johnny Collins and Jim Mageean, among others. This was no mean feat, as the competing field was the whole roomful of shanty singers, and there were many excellent singers there.

There is no truth in the rumour that Alan wore his morris gear and his rag coat just so the judges would remember him from the morning singaround to the evening... :0)

Keep it up, Alan!

Noreen

Mind you, given how few people like shanties, wining a competition probably isn't too difficult.

Congrats all the same

To Guest.

Have you counted the number of Maritime & Shanty Festivals that are held both in the UK and around the globe? In the last decade or so there has been a significant increase in the number of shanty groups as well as folk singers featuring mainly maritime material.

The rise in popularity of maritime festivals can be favourably compared with the folk revival of the early 60's.

So I would say that there are perhaps more than just a few enthusiasts who like shanties!!

I see The Guest is on our deck
Haul away lads, Haul away together
Make sure this rope is round his neck
Haul away and then belay

Then he can kick up, Bobs a-dying
Haul away lads, Haul away together
This shanty man, he won't be sighing
Haul away and then belay

Don't hold with "competitions" for shanty singing. I much prefer the thought that he did not know he was entered in a contest and won anyhow. Congratulations, have you ever been to the Toronto Morris Ale Billy, I mean Alan, give it a go next year. Lots of Morris Dancers like Shanties. JohnB

An' they got no use for a shantyman. Shantyman, Oh, shantyman, Who's got a berth for a shantyman? Sing you a song of a world gone wrong, When they got no use for a shantyman.

'Schantieman' is the actual spelling on the trophy, which I think Jim Mageean has carved himself.

I was there, and it was definitely well-deserved. Well done Alan.

I missed some of the proceedings keeping the FEW from filling the room to double the fire regulations and being the dutiful steward had to stand outside to give another FEW room to get in.
couldn't even enter the competition (being effectively on the staff). phew! you all say.
congrats anyway.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts everyone!

JohnBNo, I've never been to Toronto Morris Ale but it sounds just my scene - singing, drinking and a bit of dancing too! ... If I am passing I would certainly be interested in dropping in but it would be a very long way (from Stratford-upon-Avon, England) for just one session!
Micca, 8 Pints Yes, I am looking forward to Llanstock and I'm sure that if you twisted my arm I would be happy to do an encore ... !

"Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you ... !"
Alan

Just to correct a small point, the deadman maker trophy mentioned by Snuffy was I believe carved by Jim McDonald, who was the third judge in addition to Johnny Collins and Jim Mageean. He said that it was a reproduction of a tool his father (grandfather?) used to use as a sailmaker to flatten down the ridges in sails after sowing. It is in Indian Mahogany and shows two sorts of knots on the tool - a turk's head and a full turk's head.

"Don't mind the wind or the rolling sea ..."
Alan
