Subject: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: curmudgeon Date: 08 Jun 03 - 10:36 AM It's less than a week to go before the next monthly gathering of shanty and forebitter singers. I know that a few of the regulars are planning to jump ship for Mystic. Others will be attending a surprise party about which I can say no more in case the surprisee is lurking. So, aside from myself and Bat Goddess, will anyone else be coming? Thanks -- Tom |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Jeri Date: 08 Jun 03 - 11:03 AM S'not a surprise, 'Mudge - read bottom of invite. How COULD they schedule a party the same day? I say we all show up after the session. Of course, the way folkies are these days, folks will be asleep by 6PM! You know, 'Haul on the Bowline' works to George Brabazon (the 'Twa Maidens' tune) and 'Runnin' Down to Cuba' will fit 'Sir Festus Burke', and...I'll stop. I'll be there. Probably Emery, Bruce, Dave H, Ramona, Paul, etc. will be at the party. Naemie's gone Guaming, and Charlie & co. are probably all tuckered out and will have to stay home in their rocking chairs. But I'll be there! |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: curmudgeon Date: 08 Jun 03 - 11:52 AM Good on you, Jeri. Sadly, those disinclined to singing often forget about those who do enjoy it. Bruce was making Mystical noises the other week and talking about shanghaing some of the younger set. I don't think my brain can mix those words and tunes together. See you tomorrow -- Tom |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Charley Noble Date: 08 Jun 03 - 12:41 PM Sad but true, we'll be missing this gathering. Nor and I will be going to Mystic next weekend as sound volunteers; we've also been booked at the Seamen's Inn early Friday evening so we should be able to cover our expenses. And Brett should be resident in Guam by then, or wherever his plane decides to drop him. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Bat Goddess Date: 09 Jun 03 - 07:41 PM Brian! It will be good to hear you singing again! I learned and relearned at least three songs, walking the circuit around the lagoon in Greenfield Park while I was in the wilds of the west 'burbs of Milwaukee -- unfortunately, none of them were sea songs. But I might "Bruce it" on "The Nervous Wreck of Edna Fitzgerald" . . . And I hope to learn a Lynn Noel parody, "Million Dollar Line" soon. (Can I "Bruce it" if Bruce isn't there?!?) I should be caught up on sleep by then! (Hate to fall asleep in my Guinness.) Linn |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Bat Goddess Date: 10 Jun 03 - 07:05 PM Refresh -- it should be a good session no matter who's there, because each individual can sing more. See you Saturday! Linn |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Jeri Date: 10 Jun 03 - 07:26 PM Sure, you can Bruce it. I haven't learned any new songs in ages. Maybe I should Bruce something! I ought to at least RE-learn the stuff I once new if we're gonna get THAT much of an opportunity to sing! |
|
Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Charley Noble Date: 10 Jun 03 - 07:51 PM Sigh! Nor and I are going to be with over a hundred aggressive singers, each trying to get himself/herself heard in a late night hall with no acoustics whatsoever. What we do in our dedication for nautical music! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: MMario Date: 11 Jun 03 - 08:49 AM hmmmm- maybe I should drive north for the evening...(*grin* - I'm too cheap to do that - after all - I'll be a paying customer at Mystic!) |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Brían Date: 11 Jun 03 - 06:35 PM I will probably rerun some of my old favoritesor maybe even borrow one from Charley Noble(I promise I'll give it back) if he's not going to be there. I am trying to persuade my Significant Other to come along if I can make it. Brían |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: CET Date: 11 Jun 03 - 08:26 PM Are you doing any more this summer? This weekend is just not going to work for me. I had hoped to get to Mystic myself, but I can't take any leave due to pressure of work right now. Edmund |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Brían Date: 17 Jun 03 - 03:44 PM Well I had a good time anyway, even if some of the regulars werent there. Thanks to Bat Godess for the parking advisory. Brían |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Jun 03 - 04:20 PM Second Saturday of every month, Edmund, no matter what the season. Prolly will change it next year (starting January unless Tom decides differently) to the first Saturday of the month because of a couple major conflicts (such as Mystic). Brian! Glad you had a good time despite the low turnout and the high ambiant noise early in the session. (Not to mention the parking hassle due to Market Square Day.) I did, too -- and it was great seeing a Clara, a 4th grader, get excited by the music, the singing and the instruments. Linn |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Jeri Date: 17 Jun 03 - 05:23 PM Tom was funny: "Clara, do you want to sing a song?" "No. I know one, but I don't want to sing it?" "What is it?" "Froggie Went A-Courtin." "Oh. There are many versions of that one. How does your version go?" Clara sings song. And THEN talks about where she got the version from, where THEY got it from... Couldn't stop her after that. Brian, it was very nice to hear you singing again! |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Jun 03 - 05:43 PM Jeri- Thanks for passing that along to those of us who were away. Linn- I'm also delighted to hear about a shift to the first Saturday next year. I dearly love the Press Room Shanty Swaps but the Mystic Sea Music Festival is like being in shanty heaven. See you all in July! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Jun 03 - 07:27 PM Yeah, and we miss the May session because of Indian Neck and feel we can't go to Mystic because two in a row, oh, you know. There's no perfect weekend 12 months of the year, but we'll work something out that doesn't conflict with some of the biggies. Linn |

Subject: RE: June Shanty Session at the Press Room From: Brían Date: 17 Jun 03 - 09:17 PM Clara was the one I enjoyed most, prolly. She did warm up to us after a while. Maybe we can interest her in trading in that clarinet for a flute or squeeze box... It does feel good to sing again and BTW, I ate my weight in crab cakes and polenta at the bistro a few doors down. There goes that weight I lost :-) Brían |
