My wife and I just got back to Maine from a week long stay in San Francisco. She was conferencing but we also got to share a lot of good music thanks to resident Mudcatters and associated music friends.

Radrino was kind enough to ferry us over to Alameda, across the Bay next to Oakland, for a weekly Tuesday chantey session at an Irish pub. There we meet our co-hosts John, Brian and Denny, and a bunch of other enthusiastic singers. Skip Henderson was also there and I was delighted to hear his rendition of the Bob Roberts' song "Stormy Weather;" he's a seasoned storyteller and threatens to sail his schooner over to the East Coast for pillaging and plundering. The session lasted until 1 AM, which is amazing given that this was a weekday evening.

I ran into Chantyranger a couple of times at the Hyde Street Pier and he was nice enough to invite me to join him and another ranger Kathy for some chanty singing aboard the magnificent museum ship Balclutha.

I also dropped off a dozen Roll & Go CD's which are now for sale at the Museum Store.

Radriano also hosted a music party on the weekend at his apartment next to Golden Gate Park. There we met Skip, John and Denny again from Alameda, and Sharyn and Bill whom we'd met on last summer's trip to the Bay area. It's nice to be able to get to know some of these people better, and bounce a few unfamilar songs off them and hear some new/old songs in return.

What is it with San Francisco anyway? While Charley Noble was doing his thing, I was visiting with the amazing Swans, who filled their house one evening with all kinds of talented people, celebrating the 50th of one of their own, and I too got to meet the deep resonant Chanteyranger! Given that the Swan household already contains two awesomely talented people, and an even more talented swarm of animals, it was all too much. And I got to the Hyde Street Pier too -- saw Chanteyranger again, wandered over the boats, looked into Lark in the Morning (thank goodness I had lost my credit card two days before), and cruised Haight Ashbury. I mean, great city or what? Did I mention Down Home, home of Arhoolie Records?

Good to see you again, Charley, and thanks for singing with us aboard the Balclutha! Very good to hear you're setting of C. Fox Smih's "Shanghai Passage" again (first heard you sing it at Mystic '02) A very good melody you have for it.

Peter T. I met for the first time, and it was great meeting you. I enjoyed your singing, and several of us commented on your subtle and sweet singing and versions of songs. Glad you got to see the ships at the park, but sorry I had to run off and do a school program. Let's hang out some next time you're here. Maybe out to a restaurant with P.J. and Dave for an Indian food feeding frenzy, eh?

Maybe I should move away so I can come back and stay with the Swans. They are the best hosts and their cooking is amazing.

Personally, there are lots of things I have NOT liked about Frisco....beginning with the faggots....now that I am older and worn-down, and fat and decreptit, it is probably safe to return to the west-coast reincarnation of the Old Testiment.

But Frisco does have good public transit to get to good/cheap Chinese, good/expensive Italian foods....cheap old houses by the beach that will put you up for a week.....there is something worn-out and vampirish about the city itself....a lot of lost souls.

I've forwarded your appeal to Maine's Gay/Lesbian Alliance and I'm sure they'll prepare a suitable welcome for you.;~)

It's difficult to find Richmond, ME, on the Delorme Maine Atlas & Gazetteer, not because it is a particularly small town but because it runs along the edges of the maps. However, we're not anywhere near Bangor. But do give us an idea when you might be coming so we can better advise you of special events.

Amen to that, Chanteyranger, we will indeed feed. I had such a good time. Pam and I were particularly taken with the film of the last voyage of the lumber/codfish ship taken by its captain. I wish I had had enough time to see it all the way through. People sure worked like hell in those days.

No need to tell me about the ME - G&L alliance. Murphy of the Chesuncook Village store is infamous....and the local Bangor police seemed to enjoy the tea-room trade at their local GreyHound Bus station.....no match for Frisco though!
