Subject: New O'Carolan site with 4 formats
From: katlaughing
Date: 13 Sep 04 - 10:29 PM

"So's Your Mom," has put together a new website of O'Carolan/Carolan tunes in four formats: Noteworthy Composer, ABC, MIDI, and GIF. There is a bit of a glitch near the lower half of the page (I've emailed him about it; might be my nonMS browser), but it looks like a useful site. Check it out: click here.

Thanks,

kat

You're most welcome, Masato. It seems to be a pretty neat site.

Nice try but after listening to some of the tunes on this Site the person responsible would need to pratice more, some of tunes were way out,Lady Blayney sounded more like Lady Thatcher.

They've got some other stuff available, too, including O'NEILL'S MUSIC OF IRELAND (The 1850)" AND "ALLAN'S IRISH FIDDLER".

One may sample a couple of their songs at Sosyourmom.com

The source is given as The Complete Works of Turlough O'Carolan but the tunes and numbering seem to be identical with those given in Donal O'Sullivan's Carolan The Life Times and Music of an Irish Harper (though on 006 Planxty George Brabazon the indication Joviale in O'Sullivan is replaced by CHEERFULLY in the gif on the site; I looked only at a couple of the pieces, and in Lady Blaney referred to above the indication Allegro is left as is).

Regarding GUEST(05:16AM)'s post above on Lady Blaney it must be said that the midi is an accurate rendering of the melody line as given. You may not like the harp effect, it may not be embellished as a harper would play it, but it is the melody.

Mick

I have not heard them yet, but it is not unusual for different session groups to interpret a tune differently. They get folk-processed into "How It IS" when actually it's just "How WE DO It".

Read the fine print, people. These guys are very upfront:

ORIGIN: Chris came across this in a fleamarket some years back, no cover or publisher info on it, for 10p. It's pretty clear from the layout of the tunes that it was a copy of DONAL O'SULLIVAN'S work (pub. in 1958 and since reprinted by OSSIAN, CELTIC MUSIC and (I've no doubt) several others as well. Mel Bay's probably waiting in the wings to have a go at it!). The OSSIAN pub is ruled out as it does not have the "extra" tune (CAP'T O'NEILL) which Ossian included (presumably) to make it a copyrightable publication (Thanks to Seamus O'Malley of Cork who sent me that one!) : no matter, for none of the copies (to my knowledge) contained Mr. O'Sullivan's extensive notes, words to the various tunes or any of the other additional materials included in his two-volume original publication. A shame, I'd have loved to have been able to put the words up here as well, but such is life. At any rate, neither O'Sullivan nor the original publisher copyrighted the material, so I feel quite justified in putting the tunes up here. (I am since informed that there are several booksellers on the web where the originals are still available!)

I see others knew before: Fortunato's mention of SYM.

Also, found that So's Your Mom has been a Mudcatter for a long, long time.:-)

The Michael Miller review posted by Fortunato refers to a CD version of SYM's O'Neill/Allan website, which is separate from the Carolan stuff. (Kat has provided the link above.) This website didn't seem to work quite right for me - for instance the list of O'Neill reels runs to several pages but I could access only the first.

Not sure on what basis Miller thinks Allan has "more vibrant" tunes than O'Neill, since it runs to a comparatively meagre 120 tunes, most (if not all) of which are in O'Neill anyway.

It looks like SYM are on safe enough ground concerning any copyright in the Allan collection. I have a copy which I bought in Dublin 30-odd years ago (but priced in UK decimal currency - 25p - so post-1970). The tunes were "selected from all sources," "arranged by Hugh McDermott," and published by "Mozart Allan, 84 Carlton Place, Glasgow C.5." But even with the tunes annotated with McDermott's useful bowing and fingering guidance, the collection is not marked "copyright." Maybe the publisher just missed a trick there. A companion edition, the two-volume "Irish Pianist," which I got at the same time, is indeed copyright. This obviously contained more original work. It has the same 120 tunes, "selected from all sources by Hugh McDermott and arranged for piano and piano accordion by Ian McLeish."

Fionn, I emailed Vince Brennan from SYM's website about the glitch I had on their website and received a prompt and helpful reply. Thanks for the additional info on the sources.

FWIW, I have submitted their site for inclusion in the LINKS section.

Thanks,

kat
