Subject: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: GUEST,Julia Date: 08 Sep 06 - 11:43 AM A concert of Scottish ballads, old and new, will be presented by acclaimed singers Alison McMorland and Geordie MacIntyre on Sunday, Oct 1 at 7:00 pm at the First Parish Church on Main St in Freeport. The concert is sponsored by Ceilidh House, a Celtic cultural education organization. Alison McMorland has earned high praise as a singer of stature with a voice as pure and sparkling as highland spring water. Her long involvement in traditional music has been multi-faceted, embracing collecting, publishing, broadcasting, theatre and teaching. During the last decade she has worked extensively in community arts and Arts for Health and is a teacher of Scottish traditional music at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. In the early seventies Alison came under the inspirational guidance of Hamish Henderson who introduced her to some of the great traditional singers from whom she learnt so much. She has recently released a book following years of research entitled 'Herd Laddie o the Glen', Songs and life of the Border shepherd Willie Scott. Geordie McIntyre is a Glaswegian of Highland and Irish descent, his lifetime involvement in song, ballad and poetry is reflected in his singing, collecting and song writing. His early years as a Radio and Television technician and later as a Modern Studies teacher coupled to his passion for the outdoors has, in diverse ways, fuelled and complemented his central interest in folk music. Over the years he has performed at clubs and festivals throughout Britain, Ireland and the USA sharing his warmth of humor and voice with appreciative audiences. The two currently perform together based on a fine sense of personal harmony. They have produced several recordings, their most recent being "Ballad Tree" on the Living Tradition label.A Reviewer called their performance "A stunning display of how powerful tradition bearers can be presenting the experiences of people and the rich mythology of Scotland with a skill and unadorned passion for their cause." Admission is $10/$8 kids, elders and unwaged. For information please contact Ceilidh House 207-688-4515 e-mail mainecelt@maine.rr.com |
Subject: RE: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: Barry Finn Date: 08 Sep 06 - 01:53 PM Thanks for posting this Julia & a pox on you Main-e-aics for hiding your treasures all to well (you guys included). I met them maybe a few yrs ago. They came to a Friday nite session at the Press Room. Very nice & warm, nice to chat up with they were but nothing prepared me for their singing. They were fantastic. Freeport's a bit too north for me, are they doing anything a little more towards the south or maybe if they'd like they could share a glass at the Press Room the Friday evening before (with you & Fred)? |
Subject: RE: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: GUEST,Pamela in Ithaca Date: 08 Sep 06 - 02:29 PM I also met them at the Press Room - probably the same session (during the Portsmouth Maritime Music Fest) that Barry was at. We made a strong enough connection that I was able to entice them out for a weekend in the Finger Lakes. They don't make it over to the States often enough, and when they do they're pretty quiet about where they'll be. Don't miss this one, if you're anywhere near Freeport. And tell them "Pamela in Ithaca" says hello! |

Subject: RE: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: Effsee Date: 08 Sep 06 - 02:33 PM I saw them at the Orkney Folk Festival a few years ago. I've loved Alison's singing for decades but I find Geordie's voice eerily like Ewan MacColl's! |
Subject: RE: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: Bat Goddess Date: 08 Sep 06 - 03:48 PM They are truly wonderful singers and lovely people! It WAS at the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival Saturday singaround about three or four years ago that they "dropped in" because they were in the neighborhood. Alas, I missed them when they did the house concert at the West's in York, ME several years ago. I think I had a good excuse, though -- Curmudgeon was having major heart surgery. Hope we get to hear them SOMETIME again when they're in the vicinity! Linn |
Subject: RE: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: lamarca Date: 08 Sep 06 - 05:35 PM They came to NEFFA one year (or was it NOMAD - past festivals get confused in my CRS memory bank sometimes) and were fantastic! I'm very fond of their CD, The Ballad Tree. Here's their website: http://www.alisonmcmorland.com/default.htm |
Subject: RE: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: karen k Date: 08 Sep 06 - 06:41 PM I'll be in Maine then and plan to attend. Just tonight had an e-mail from Geordie about their trip over. Subject: RE: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: Barry Finn Date: 08 Sep 06 - 08:08 PM Thanks Karen I went to their site http://www.alisonmcmorland.com/alison.html to see where else they're performing but it just says various New England venues. I found Tuftenboro (thank you), it's just outside of Laconia, not to far but still at least a couple of hours which is far better than Freeport. They must plan to visit this area at this time of year for some special reason. It was at a session during the kick off of the Maritime Folk Festival that I saw them at the Press Room & I do remember Pamela being there (I be seeing you again Pamela, great). Maybe they'll be there again, seems like there'll be a decent chance going by the past. Barry |
Subject: RE: A. McMorland & G. MacIntyre Maine 10/1 From: GUEST,Julia Date: 09 Sep 06 - 09:13 AM Just for the recoed, Freeport is less than 1 1/2 hours from Portsmouth (20 minutes from Portland) And remember, LL Bean's is open 24 hours- you can do your shopping after the show! Seriously, It's not any more of a hardship to drive north, esp on the turnpike and definitely a show worth driving for!.try it and see! See you there! Julia |
