Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 16 Jan 10 - 01:53 PM I be bringing new toy too my Tanglewood 12 string. Im getting into Traveling Wilbury songs and the 12 string fits in well. I Cant wait to try the 12 string with' Ride On. Then its off for a Rogering the same day if Brian can make the event? Its been a long time since the last Lower Stoke event and Im really looking forward to it. My Cats taken a dislike to the 12 string every time I play it he starts meowing and goes out ? |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: VirginiaTam Date: 17 Jan 10 - 05:50 AM I put new strings on Odetta this morning. At the moment, the tuning keeps riding downwards, so I think I must have done something wrong. Can the machine heads get messed up by cold? Will give her a couple of hours to settle and try tuning again. It is nerve wracking though. I have fear of breaking strings or doing damage to her neck. |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Richard Bridge Date: 17 Jan 10 - 08:16 AM New strings stretch a bit. I think that Newtones do so more than some other brands. If you looked on the internet for how to string a guitar most of the instructions are adequate. There are three schools of thought that I know of: - 1. If you have three turns round a windlass the rope will not slide 2. One turn above the string hole and the rest below pinch the string neatly 3. The fewer turns the better because tension is then less likely gradually to work the string onto or off the post, so you make a sort of knot after threading the string. Brian Rodgers uses version 3 I use version 2. What you definitely do not do is thread the string a tiny bit and then wind up a fat bobbin. You get about the right amount of the string round the post if you thread the string, make a straight line from saddle to machine head, then take the string where it crosses the nut and bring that point on the string back to the first fret. Now wind. |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 21 Jan 10 - 04:04 PM Thanks Essex Girl I think Fisheyes taking me but Its good to know thanks. The guilty parties, Im shocked. I won a raffle at the folk mob Rugby club a few months back and I opened the bottle of Vodka and shared it out among friends and the bar man had a quiet word with me. I pleaded ignorence. I told him I was aware that it is against the law "like big time" to bring ones own drink in to a public house but I did not think or know that it was equally has bad to open a raffle prize in a public bar and drink it. I learned a lesson and made me peace with the barman and wont do it again. |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 Jan 10 - 07:35 PM I am happy to report that Peter the Landlord, despite some views favouring the restriction of immigration (but taking care to explain that he had a black brother - I did not ask for a diagram) has agreed to the display of a FAF banner. Beer will be ordered on Monday, exactly what we get depends on what Sheps will supply but the order of preference is as above. Peter Sage, local karaoke hero, (he actually is very good, he did come last year once and sang "Goodnight Irene") is apparently a mouth harp wizz and is saying he will bring his mouth harps. Peter aka Shuffles is bringing his classical guitar so that we can assure him it is correctly strung. Peter the Landlord wants his electric bass Rodgering. Various other locals are expressing interest. I will be putting up posters on lampposts manana. |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 24 Jan 10 - 04:23 PM I put it to you my 12 string does not need Rogereing it both stays in tune and the action is perfect. I bring the set up certificate for those that doubt it. Rogeres wont be out of pocket mind he can sort me Mandolin out which has me pulling me pubic hairs out at present. Three Nuts have exploded so it needs a Brass nut and another set up? Fisheyes picking me up at 10.30 for a 12.00 start at the Nags. Richards paste is very good Tam. I use it to fuel me moped. |

I have stood in a cloud of locusts and it's not a lot of fun. |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Jan 10 - 04:25 PM If you are happy with your 12, then it is right for you. I cannot imagine how you are destroying mandolin nuts like that. |
|
Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 24 Jan 10 - 04:33 PM Richard its not me its the Nuts rogers done a good job on me Mandolin then the nut went. and through out the set up? I had a large sebt tot pay off so I have replaced the nut my self but it went again, Plastic nuts are clearly useless, bone nuts are ok but clearly to prevent this happening in future a Brass nut seems to be the answer? I bring it for a Rogers exchange you are welcome to have a look your self ? |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 Jan 10 - 10:28 AM The Swan told me last night that Sheps only made 16 barrels of the Burns Night Special and it was reserved for very special customers. So we may not get any. But I was on the Late Red last night and it was big, round, and delightful. |
|
Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 Jan 10 - 11:51 AM Oh shit! Calling all bars! Emergency, emergency. Peter the Landlord has gone overboard and ordered TWO barrels. He could not get the Burns Night Special, Sheps had indeed sold out (boo), but has got a Late Red AND a Kent's Best coming. Now we can't let him get stuck with un-drunk beer that goes off, can we, or he won't want folk sessions any more. So that's a three line whip for all beer drinkers, please. |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 26 Jan 10 - 07:23 PM Ho Hum! If you put it that way, I will have to step up to the plate, and take care of the Kent Best. Is there anyone arriving pre noon with a spare seat in the car, who would pick myself and Framus up at Strood. I shall find out what pubic transport (not a typo, given the propensity for cock-ups) is available, just in case. See you all there, and as usual, I shall be taking requests, those that don't end in "off". Don T. |

Subject: RE: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK) From: Kev The Clogs Date: 27 Jan 10 - 07:25 AM Alas, Dilligaf and I will not be at the gathering. It is that time of year - we shall be at Whitehall Saturday night and most of Sunday taking part in the Whitehall Parade which comemorates the death of our leader, King Charles the First. Full period clothing, cold, possible snow and half of the parade done at funeral march speed - should be good!! Anyway, London back to Sevenoaks afterwards. Due to my lack of driving licence, it seemed crazy to do London to Sevenoaks to Stoke back to Sevenoaks again (remember, we only JUST made the last hour of last year's January session, which was London to Stoke DIRECT!!!). So have a great time people - make sure that you make a serious dent in those two barrels of beer, and we'll see you at some point soon. The King and the Cause! Kev the Clogs |
