My best mate Steve Warne died last night. Those of you who might have played with him or heard him play will remember his guitar playing and his sense of humour. If you knew him raise a glass and play a tune to his memory.

gedpipes- I never had the pleasure of meeting your friend Steve. Many of my friends have died in the last few years, so I send my thoughts your way. Might there be somewhere online with his music available for listening? I'd like to at least know Steve's music. If you are willing, and when you are able, perhaps you might tell us about him.

This is a shock. I thought Steve was in long term remission.
As a guitarist he was a one off. He could accompany anyone in any key only playing by ear. In that respect he was unusual.
   Years ago when he expressed an interest in flamenco, I took him on a weekends hothouse course in flamenco dance/guitar/cante in the village of Middlesmoor. This course was heavy going for me, but Steve did it his way. I took notes, photocopied the sheet music, studied, videoed, chatted etc etc. Steve refused to learn or play standard notation and tablature,he spent the weekend REALLY listening, in a way I couldn't imagine, then blended what he had learnt with what he already knew and played it back at me...wonderful...a true one off.

I had to check with Ged that this was indeed the same Steve Warne that I was at school with many years ago. Regrettably it is.
One day, when we were aged about 10, I came across Steve playing a battered old nylon-stringer in an empty classroom. I was instantly struck and desperately wanted to imitate. It was a life changing moment for me and I have played a guitar almost everyday since then, some 43 years ago.
A couple of years ago we met by chance and I reminded him of that time, pointing out that, in a way, he was responsible for all the years of gigs behind me. He took great pleasure from that and we chatted a while and reminisced, coming across as a really nice, charming guy.
53 years old is no age to die, but if all we can hope for is to make a lasting impression, then Steve has a legacy.
I'll certainly remember him fondly.

Steve's funeral is on tuesday 14th Sept a.m in Stokesley cemy.
I'd be really grateful if anyone who has any photos of Steve would share them with me. I have some WAVE audio files but I've no idea how to upload or convert them. Any suggestions would most gratefully be recived.

I knew Steve oh about 30 years ago and strangely he's been on my mind recently - so I googled him today and was shocked to find it was the same Steve. We lost touch of course - that's the stupidity of youth for you, but I knew he'd moved to Stokesley and was glad about that as he loved the place - also glad that he kept playing - something I don't think I truly appreciated. I'm glad he loved flamenco - I've been taking classes for years and it keeps me going .... so so sad - Ged you will miss him terribly.

Steve was buried on Tuesday - a great turnout. The early morning grey skies let in the sun as he was laid to rest. Back to the White Swan at Stokesley for the wake. Lots of tears, good memories and crack. As Steve would have said.
"It was a good night - shame this wasn't it"

Only just seen this today and that comes as a large shock. Nice guitarist and I too have some recordings somewhere of him playing in Farlington years ago. I think the last time I saw him was with Ged in Kirkbymoorside a few years back.

i remember showing him greendays time of your life for the first time, a song that i had listend to a good 30 times and not only did he teach me how to play it but filled me in with most of the lyrics haha its wot he called the musical ear.

Only learned of Steve's loss this a.m from brother Ian. I'd not seen Steve, or listened to him play for a few years, nevertheless I was totally shocked at the tragic news, especially at such a young age. My most sincere condolences to Ian, Bob and the family.

My final memory of Steve will be watching his face light up as he played a tape of his beautiful music from his hospital bed. Laughter and tears , one and the same.I will never forget it , he was and is truly inspirational.

I dont think I knew him, although I might have met him at the Albert folk club.

I was googling Steve to find out what he was up to, having not heard from him for a while.
We used to play together - rehearsing at his home every few weeks.
i cant believe he's gone!
I hope his wife and son are finding the strength to fight on and remember what a fine talent he had on that guitar.
