Subject: Open Mike? From: The Shambles Date: 24 Aug 00 - 06:17 PM I keep seeing this friendly chap advertised but have yet to see him play. Can anyone tell me what he is like as a performer? |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Amergin Date: 24 Aug 00 - 06:32 PM Either this is a smartassed thread, Shambles, or you don't know that Open Mike means Open Microphone, where anyone can get up to the front and sing, read, recite or whatever.... Amergin |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: sophocleese Date: 24 Aug 00 - 06:35 PM Variable. Sometimes he seems to be excellent and you can't get enough of him, at other times he drones and mumbles and appears half drunk but very cheerful. Try and catch him on a good night. |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Jeri Date: 24 Aug 00 - 06:39 PM Imagination, Amergin... I haven't seen him recently, but used to be a big fan. He seems to have quite a range. At times he was incredibly horrible, possibly due to the fact he was scared stiff. Other times, he was as good as the best, and that was even better because I hadn't been expecting anything special. I'd definitely recommend people go listen to him! |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Amergin Date: 24 Aug 00 - 06:44 PM Ok, I get it now....Slow today I guess... Don't forget the times he forgets half the words.... (have done that once reciting something....very embarrassing) Amergin |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Sorcha Date: 24 Aug 00 - 06:58 PM It all depends on the Sound Person, and equipment. You know, is the stuff big enough to tape cheat sheets to? |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: RWilhelm Date: 24 Aug 00 - 07:59 PM Around here he likes to sing a lot of Neil Young songs. |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Aug 00 - 08:34 PM Actually its a movie of Mike's by-pass surgery. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Lox Date: 24 Aug 00 - 10:51 PM I think he's the most underrated player on the planet. Not only does he play more gigs than anyone else, but he's able to play more than one gig at the same time. And thats without the aid of the internet! Anyway, with a name like that - what a nice guy!!! (bleeaaargh) Lox |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Jim the Bart Date: 24 Aug 00 - 10:55 PM Sometimes (And I say this only half factiously) it depends on how long he stays open. He tends to degenerate in the wee wee hours (and yes, Spaw, I am referring to that time of night when everything that you've drunk turns to - oh, you know). |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: campfire Date: 25 Aug 00 - 12:18 AM Around here, he's really nervous and not very good in the early part of the evening. Later on, he gets better for awhile, until, as Bartholomew stated above, in the wee hours he tends to forget words alot. Or fall off the stage. Unfortunately, too often the "fans" only come for the middle of the night. I really think all he needs is some encouragement in the opening songs, and he'd improve greatly. campfire |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Jim the Bart Date: 25 Aug 00 - 10:02 AM Darn - it was supposed to be "facetiously", not "factiously" |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Ebbie Date: 25 Aug 00 - 10:50 AM Doesn't he have cousins named Trad and Anon? I sometimes enjoy them a lot. Ebbie |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Catrin Date: 25 Aug 00 - 10:57 AM Open Mike is an unpredictable bugger - part of why I love him. I heard him sing three versions of Shadow Brown once - in succession (out of tune too!). It was all right though, because when I woke up, he was singing the most dreamy love song. I forgave him instantly. I think I have a sort of love affair with Mike - sometimes he lets me down - but when he makes up for it, he REALLY makes up for it. |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: paddymac Date: 25 Aug 00 - 11:10 AM Not to worry Bartholomew - my machine is inflected with the same bug. |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 25 Aug 00 - 05:30 PM Bartholomew: I was HOPING you didn't mean "factiously". We have got enough of that around already. Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Naemanson Date: 25 Aug 00 - 05:39 PM Good old Open Mike is my favorite of all performers bar none. Sure I could pay the big buucks for the greats like Rick Fielding but doing that guarantees me a great show and I love to be surprised. As has been stated above, Open Mike, is sometimes great and sometimes horrible but he always has heart. |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: JamesJim Date: 25 Aug 00 - 10:42 PM I've heard that he's in jail for indecent exposure. I personally prefer his cousin, Hot Mike, but it wouldn't hurt her to clean up her act a little as well. |
Subject: RE: Open Mike? From: Mbo Date: 25 Aug 00 - 10:44 PM Never met him. |
