Guess I will have to close mine out. BillD, any suggestions for good, free accounts online for one to use as a "public" account? I guess Linux isn't a friend of Charlie Brown's, eh? **BG**

I received quite a bunch of junk in the first week or so after opening my account. Since then very little has appeared.

Don't use Hotmail... go to Visto.com and open an account there... It's a great online mail service!

I have Hotmail, and I only get junkmail on Saturday mornings, 3 pieces exactly. Other than that...nada.

I have a Yahoo account, and don't get spammed there at all. They have also just started a "bulk folder" in addition to your regular inbox. Anything that seems like it might be spam goes there instead of your regular box.

I also have a hotmail account. I don't use it as often as I used to, but I have never had a single bit of spam come through. And since I don't discuss hot stock tips or business ideas on Hotmail (and wouldn't even if I had any), this doesn't bother me very much. There are enough things going on in the world to cause serious worries without adding this stuff to the plate.

Aloha,
Mark

I have Hotmail, and get tons of spam. Most of it comes in Bulk Mail. I just erase it and move on. Think I will change to yahoo, though. DougR

I have hotmail but have not been aware of any increase or over load of spam but when I do get any I can block the sender and sooner or later they tire of altering their address to gain access and go away. It could be your settings or if you've got a webpage with your hotmail address on it. They usually find your account via an online source where you've posted your address.

Can anyone tell me how I can find a free email service that will allow me to post my gigs to a mailing list of local, musically supportive folks? I can only send info to a handful at a time with hotmail. Is there a service that will let me post to evryone at once? It would make this already difficult task so much easier.

Thanks, too much to do and not enough time to do it

I've got two Hotmail addresses: one's my actual name and the other is a made-up nonsense name. The real ones gets the spam, the other gets -- really! -- none. I think the spammers must have name generators, like the telephone messaging machines that are illegal in most places.

gnu, I have email accounts as part of my deals with ISPs (I use 2 - one is free but I have to pay the cost of phone calls - too expensive to use a lot but a handy back up) but I found it useful to open a Yahoo email account as it allowed me to read all my emails (including those from my other accounts) using a web browser rather than having to set up email accounts in mail programs - very handy when you don't have access to your own machine.

My dad's Hotmail box got filled with EMBARASSING spam, I don't know why, and the problem was, the senders were always different, so you couldn't block them!
I don't know why. My father is really clumsy at using Internet (actually it was me who checked his mail) and I don't think he gave his address in some strange sites or so.
I had to change his account, but mine works OK, I get really few spam. I think the most mess comes out when you answer a spam message: this way they're sure your account is working, and they probably tell other spammers! So let's remember we must not answer any spam stuff.
And if you have to give your address to people you don't trust very much, like sex sites, it's better to have another less important account for things like these.

there are various ways spam merchants 'harvest' your email address...they write programs to look thru newsgroups, they have spy programs in various software, they pick up addresses from places where you sing 'guestbooks...and a dozen other ways I haven't named...they even create innocent looking sites to lure folks to click on some URL, and re-route you to their sites.....depending on the email program you use, there ARE ways filter 'most' of this stuff out, but it does take a bit of time to read about how to do it...At the VERY least, you should have an anti-virus program running, and next on the list is a firewall..(there are FREE versions of both...list on request)

one thing you CAN do...when you go anywhere on the WWW or internet that lists your default email address, enter that address in a format that does not allow automated programs to harvest it..

example: joeschmoe@widget.com can be changed to joeschmoe(at)widget.com ...or joeschmoeSPAM@widget.com etc...with a note to 'remove SPAM' for reply or replace 'at' with @.....

various firewall programs will stop java & javascript & cookies from messing with you except where YOU allow it..(like your Mudcat cookie)

lots to learn, but just a few things will help a lot
