Subject: My car needs taxing!! From: Red Eye Date: 31 Dec 01 - 01:41 AM Bought a car a couple of months ago and just noticed the tax runs out Dec 01. How can I tax it on New Years Day when the PO is closed. Can I tax it prior, ie today? |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: Blackcatter Date: 31 Dec 01 - 02:02 AM Is this anything like Boxing Day? Car Taxing Day? Are their songs and costumes involved? |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: katlaughing Date: 31 Dec 01 - 02:07 AM LOL, Blackcatter! Not sure what you mean Red Eye, but the po's in the States are open, tomorrow, if that's any help. |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: GUEST,Paul Date: 31 Dec 01 - 03:58 AM You can tax it up to 14 days prior to the renewal date. If you keep the car off the road, and don't use it you also have up to 14 days to fill in a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) Certificate before you get into trouble. Paul |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 31 Dec 01 - 05:17 AM They also will not worry too much about you taxing it a few days retrospectively. There used to be a semi-official 14 day grace period. Not sure if that still applies but I am pretty certain that if you were to tax it in the first week of January you would not get in trouble. (I hope!) Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: GUEST,Paul Date: 31 Dec 01 - 08:00 AM I had to ring DVLA up about this a couple of months ago, and the 14 days of 'grace' doesn't apply any more. (Only for SORN) Mind you, would be a pretty mean policeman who pulled you up on New Year's Day... Paul |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: Mr Red Date: 31 Dec 01 - 09:12 AM Porlock Hill is pretty taxing. 1 in 4 in old money. |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: Red Eye Date: 31 Dec 01 - 09:18 AM Blackcatter, yes it's a hilarious day when the government relieve you of £150 so that you can drive your car on their roads. They also charge a ludricrous ammount at the pumps to satisfy the goverments thirst for tax. |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: Gypsy Date: 31 Dec 01 - 10:56 AM Kat, are you sure about that? Our PO is shut tight for New Years day here, on West Coast. |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: katlaughing Date: 31 Dec 01 - 11:19 AM Yes, on New Year's day, here, too, Gypsy, but not New Year's EVE Day, today, at least that I know of. |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: Jock Morris Date: 31 Dec 01 - 04:32 PM If you're going to be sober enough to even consider driving on the 1st of Jan then you're just not celebrating New Year correctly:-) Scott |

Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: M.Ted Date: 01 Jan 02 - 12:05 AM Where you have tax, we have tags, and in some states, inspection stickers, as well--In Pennsylvania, you had to have your inspection sticker before you could get new tags, and if the tags expired, you couldn't get the inspection done until the tags were current--Catch 22 is real-- |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: GUEST Date: 01 Jan 02 - 12:46 AM Are the tags anything like, the tags put on game animals, in the winter, in Wyoming?
Are you fare game, if you have one? Are you fairlt game if you don't have one?
If you "backside" a moose, on the backroads of Maine, does your kaboska belong in the caboose, or may you run loose?
Why did you make THIS posting? |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: Mr Red Date: 01 Jan 02 - 03:17 PM a tax from a flamer! |
Subject: RE: My car needs taxing!! From: JudeL Date: 02 Jan 02 - 07:47 AM The scary bit is not the possibility of a £25 fine for expired MOT but that if you don't have a valid MOT it invalidates your insurance so effectively you are driving without insurance. For those not in the UK, here it's illegal to drive without insurance (as in - they can take your licence away from you illegal) and having a car without a valid tax disc can get you a hefty fine. To get a tax disc you have to have an insurance certificate (valid for that car) and an MOT certificate (unless it's less than 3 years old) and a form saying that it's your car. Take all that plus £150 to a main post office and god help you if someone has mis-written/ mis-typed the registration number on any of the documents (as my insurance agent once did). Jude who's car is off the road at the moment having failed it's MOT by having the clutch give up under the strain of the rolling road test! |
