Subject: RE: Scan Tester tunes workshop, Lewes Arms From: Dave Ruch Date: 12 Apr 08 - 03:12 PM Just read about this on the Musical Traditions website. Do these sessions get recorded for the benefit of those who can't attend? If so, how does one access them? Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Scan Tester tunes workshop, Lewes Arms From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 13 Apr 08 - 12:10 PM Dear Dave, No, alas, because there would be all sorts of copyright problems, but some of the people attending will probably make recordings of some of the tunes played for their personal use as Will has invited them to do that. I hope that some festivals will get Will to do some similar sessions - you could ask your local one to book him - and there's no doubt that we'll want him to do more workshops for us in future. Thanks for taking an interest, and hope to see you in Lewes one of these days, Valmai |
Subject: RE: Scan Tester tunes workshop, Lewes Arms From: Mr Happy Date: 31 Oct 09 - 04:00 PM I didn't know what 'Scan Tester' was. Maybe I'm not alone, here's some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scan_Tester |
Subject: RE: Scan Tester tunes workshop, Lewes Arms From: mikesamwild Date: 29 Aug 11 - 10:37 AM I enjoyed Will's workshop at Whitby the other day. Does anyone know what keys Scan Tester's Anglos were in. I think Will was using a G/D but said Scan probably has a C/G and played in C as they were more usual and adopted other keys as a result of playing with Peter Kennedy etc on melodeons and fiddles. I didn't get a chance to ask him after the workshop. If anyone has a contact email for Will please PM me. |
Subject: RE: Scan Tester tunes workshop, Lewes Arms From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 29 Aug 11 - 01:00 PM Hello! Yes, Will is a wonderful player. The metal-ended instrument he plays was Scan's; I think that's a CG. Most of the time Will plays a wooden-ended instrument which I think is GD; he plays a lot in D. (Excuse the ignorance of an English system player.) Will uses email as little as possible, so the best bet is to catch him at a session, or festival (especially the Lewes Folk Festival , 6-9 October) or Folk at the Royal Oak, Lewes. Topic Records re-issued the double LP of Scan called 'I Never Played To Many Posh Dances' as a double CD [TSCD581D]. Reg Hall's book of the same name about him is out of print but pops up occasionally on Amazon or chez Dave Eyre. Valmai (Lewes) |

We continue to meet every Saturday night except for Bonfire, Christmas and New Year if they fall on a Saturday. Workshops for the rest of 2011: These last a full Saturday or Sunday & the tutor performs at the Elephant & Castle in the evening. Subject: RE: Scan Tester tunes workshop, Lewes Arms From: Ann N Date: 30 Aug 11 - 06:23 AM Like Mike I really enjoyed Will's workshop at Whitby, he gives the tunes such 'lift and life'. Any of his workshops are worth going to just for the pleasure of hearing him play :) |
Subject: RE: Scan Tester tunes workshop, Lewes Arms From: Vic Smith Date: 30 Aug 11 - 10:19 AM In this year's Lewes Folk Festival, Will Duke is very involved, playing for three events with the Swan Steppers on Saturday 8/10 and then playing for a concert and leading a sssion with The Twagger Band at the Royal Oak in Lewes on Sunday 9/10 And as Valmai says, you can hear him every Thursday playing and singing at the folk club at the Royal Oak. The evening always starts with an extended tune session and Will always features in that. |
