Romany from the Robain family, Maracas, St. Joseph, in 1974; from the National Cultural Council. On the surface this might appear to be a wedding song, yet the joke about the horse urine is the type associated with Picong, and the drinking would suit the atmosphere at Wakes. The last verse – 'Gallon etc.' has been adapted from one of the songs sung by children – Pass play – as Dr. Elder calls it. We find another adaptation of it in the song about the Camille murder case. This song accompanied the game 'Baisey down' in which a girl got up – 'Ballon montey' – slowly subsided in her full dress like a balloon – 'Ballon désann' and then tried to kiss the ground, but sometimes fell in the mud or water – 'Ballon tombey an glo'. [ibid, p.194] |
