"Irish Joe" Lynch of Co. Cork

Facebook post.

Joe Lynch, 29/11/1954 - 26/11/2025

Dear Folks, Family and Friends,
I got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January ’25. But please don’t cry for me, I certainly didn’t when I heard the news.

The reason being I’ve had a blissful life, knowing you all, loving you and being loved. With many of you I got to share stories, poems, songs and love. With more we shared lots of hard work beneath the hot Australian sun, I couldn’t have been more happy. And was there heartache along the way?? Of course there was, it makes one appreciate the Sun ??.

I got 70+ years of heaven. And now I’m up and away and who knows what adventures lay ahead. I think there is more to all of us than this old bus that eventually breaks down, permanently, but I don’t know, nobody knows. So make the best of every day, make the best of yourselves, and the best of life.

PS, Several of my 'Sunday night poems' will be posted in the days following this announcement, and then my FB will shut down for good. It’s been a blast.

Love Joe.

"Good morning to all Dad's friends and family. We are eternally grateful for all the incredible messages, calls and support during this time. Instead of a funeral, we will be holding a small concert to honour the life of Dad.
It will be at the Maleny RSL on Saturday the 10th of January, 2026 at 2:00pm.
We look forward to seeing you there. xx"

"Henry Duckbargle : His poem called "merry Christmas Joey somewhere in Afghanistan" is a landmark in emotional writing"

"Irish/Australian, Storytelling, Poetry and Song at its very best. Joe will make you laugh, cry and feel like you never imagined" : Maleny Music Festival program.

"Outrageously funny, deeply romantic, universally unique…

Irish Joe Lynch is poet, storyteller and singer who frequents the folk festival circuit Australia wide and internationally, captivating audiences of all ages.

Born and bred in County Cork, Ireland with no such luxuries as TV or electricity he grew up with the ancient arts of storytelling, music and song for entertainment.
Joe now brings those Celtic Sagas to us, stories laced with wisdom, romance and intrigue and sometimes downright hilarious… but always entertaining.

Joe’s raw yet beautiful spirit will transport you away as he weaves his stories through poetry and song.

This is a show for all ages, bring your young ones and your elders."      :    National Cartoon Gallery, 2020

Beautiful Joe is, and will continue to be, very sadly missed - He deeply touched SO many folks here in Oz.   Much Love and gentle hugs to Ricky, and Joey, and Family.

Rich-Joy, Maleny

Joe Lynch made a great contribution to the preservation of Irish culture. His storytelling and music made his performances a must-see. He was also a lovely man. I send my condolences to all those who know and love him and have included his name in the "In Memoriam" thread. RIP Joe.

His good mate and fellow poet, Brendan O'Shea, sent me some more Facebook posts re Our Beloved Joe :

"From what I can remember: he was born in Ireland, the youngest of 11 children and grew up in a house with no electricity or running water. Left as a teenager to work in London and then came out to Australia. He was 48 years in Australia and used to make jokes about how he'd lost his accent - so you'd never know he wasn't born here!"   Brendan

"Good evening all, Jess again, on behalf of my late brilliant and beautiful Dad.

For a man who was not religious, he certainly had a deep appreciation for the mystery of life, death and existence.   Just after his diagnosis, he went on a trip to visit the beautiful Buddhist temples in the south of Thailand. He seemed to love the concept of the 'wheel of life'. The cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. This went hand in glove with the curious, covert physicist/ astronomer in him that found fascination in the thought that we are all 'made of stardust'. After the physical being breaks down, our atoms go and find another role, another place in this infinite, vast and eternal universe of ours.

Perhaps dad, you may indeed come back as a strawberry after all.
Love to you all x "   JESS
