happy?

Following PLO long-distance, protracted shelling of the town of Marjayoun, Lebanon

and especially targeting the easiest sites, the school & library, Marjayoun found there

was barely a book left in the town.  Nothing for the children to study.

A certain Tinker Sale, working in the area in January 1982, learned from local officials

that this last was considered the most pressing social problem - not living conditions,

religion, or even the continuing daily shelling.

Promising to fix this, and ultimately aided by many, a new library (seeded with 16,000

volumes in five languages) was established there.

The "Sons of Esther Levitt - Sa'ad Hadaad Memorial Library" opened on 2/27/1984.

Without all the women, now; where would we be?
Working and caring throughout history
Their hands on the plow, but their stories untold,
So here's to the women, who shouldered the load!
The wilderness held you in the palm of her hand,
It took more than muscle to settle this land,
Women together went straight to the task
With schools and libraries -- a city at last.

Ah, nice to see the "Happy" column again, Abby. I see we have several Linda Allen (click) songs in the database. Somebody recently introduced me to her work, and I really like it.
