Help: what's this musical instrument

I came across an old instrument and I would appreciate any suggestions as to what it might be.

It looks like a banjo ukulele, and is about the same size, but instead of a skin there is a metal plate and a large metal horn coming out from behind it. Could it be something connected with early recording techniques?
