Subject: Tommy Gunn - RIP From: Fiolar Date: 27 Nov 01 - 09:07 AM Another loss to traditional music has been the passing of the Irish musician Tommy Gunn in October. In the 1960s together with Robin Morton and Cathal McConnell, he formed the band which became known as "Boys of the Lough" and which is still going strong. Tommy left the group fairly early on. Subject: RE: OBIT: Tommy Gunn - RIP From: Aidan Crossey Date: 27 Nov 01 - 09:56 AM There's a real pity! Hopefully his son, Brendan - now famous/infamous in his own right as a dialogue coach to the stars (e.g. Brad Pitt and Mickey Rourke in their "Northern Irish" movies) - will keep the Gunn fiddlin' tradition alive (Brendan used to teach me phonetics as part of my degree course at the University of Ulster and I remember one drunken rake where the pair of us and two frolicsome dames went on a bit of a spraoí. I didn't know at the time - and probably didn't care much - but Brendan is a bit of a dab hand at the fiddlin' himself.) Anyway ... by way of a tribute, here's a link to Jim Maginn's site, which has an animation of Tommy Gunn steppin' it on the index page. Jim Maginn's photos of Irish musicians. Here's a health, to you, Tommy! You kep' 'er lit! I hope the big fella's waitin for you with open arms. |
